A lot, but the chief difference is the ability for paid resources to be hosted there. Beyond that there's a ton of stuff that are more about improving functionality but didn't require the rename IMHO.

I hope this brings more attention and justification for introducing global add-ons that belong to the editor itself rather than individual projects. For example, a GDScript code formatter shouldn't have to be included in and duplicated across every project.

In most cases the project only needs a reference - like manifest entry, or version requirement - while the actual addon is stored outside of the project. I have done an experiment in that direction in the CMake template of Godot project, which comes with Rider 2026.2 eap3.

Not yet sure what to think of it. One one hand I like the idea, on the other hand what I really like about Godot is the fact that I actually *can* get good asset and plugins without feeling like being Nickel and Dimed at every corner and at every opportunity along the way. (1/2)

I really hope this won't be accessible and present enough to overly discourage people to actually release good stuff for free. (2/2)

In Blender there is now Blender extension (only free and FOSS) but there is also a large offer of paid addon (SuperHive) of high quality addon and asset. So one wants to build something for months and give it for free, so paid stuff is good for Godot, as the engine cant offer everything.

I don't think any of us (at the Godot Foundation) wants AI slop on the store, so we'll do our best to find which policies and guidelines to put in place to avoid it. The best way to help is by sending your feedback 🙏

You could (eventually) implement an autohide feature. If something gets a negative enough rating over time (so it can't just be review bombed by competitors), it gets suppressed in the search results. Then the community could do the rest. Granted this also encourages groupthink & brigading...

I think maybe having something similar to what steam does and require a user to let people know if it was ai assisted and giving it a little badge

I think the best policies atm- seeing as how the ai data center push is actively ruining lives right at this very moment- is to be staunchly anti-AI/LLM and disallow any and all tools that either actively use or make it easier to use things like Claud or ChatGPT.

just for clarity one of the problems in discussions like these is that different people have different definitions for what ai use is i for one don't want any fully ai generated or vibe coded things on any asset store. but if you use ai to find information, or to help with debugging, i don't mind

I feel like a strict no genAI policy is the best course of action yes people will lie and say that they didn't vibeslop something but eventually they all get found out and then you just ban the people who violate the rule it's better to be strict with this than be like>

"oh but I can't put a strict rule in place because then people will just lie and what will I do then!" because you can't give these people an inch as they will take a mile

To echo what others have said, I think having a system to let you hide assets with specific tags or conditions would be great, and it works for anything, not just filtering out AI slop.

I really hope the tags will be curated. Letting people create custom tags without anyone to cleanup usually ends up making search and filtering useless. E.g. steam workshop. Otherwise really exited to see where this is going!

A good upgrade from the Library, but I'm dreading the "buy and sell assets" bit. Don't get me wrong, I get that people need money to live so I'm all for rewarding their hard work, but financial incentive ruins things a lot too. What about fostering a donation-based system instead? FOSS style.

Would you like something like itch where they have pay-what-you-want for free assets alongside their paid assets? Maybe paid assets could require 20-30 bucks to encourage making lower effort assets free/pay-what-you-want and discourage slop.

This is exciting, will it still be accessible from the engine like the Asset Library? The ease of accessing templates in the asset library is great for education but one of the issues on the roadmap makes it sound like you might only be able to find plugins in your library.

Yeah sorry I phrased my question poorly. Im curious if it’s still as accessible as the Asset Library, meaning you can download templates/plugins from the engine without a separate browser tab, making an account etc. If it’s already in the beta releases though I guess I can just check lol

like some things about this, one case i didnt was for example, try searching 'noise' on both old and new. one is a kind of fuzzy search while the other goes for titles. no opinion on the ai convo, i still use it...
