Calling the 9th month “september” is technical debt

Good point! We could get literal with the Chinese analog which is actually "1 month, 2 month" and that would help. And some leading zeros for padding to fixed width. Also, I think we should be zero-based, not one-based.

I'm going to engage in a little Romesplaining here. Sorry if this is old news for anyone. It's all because the Roman Empire was just Greek Empire fan fic. The Romans wanted to be Greece SO BAD. But Rome gets pretty chilly, and Greece was always warm and lovely, and that started the problem. [1/4]

January and February were quite cold in Rome, so the Romans just basically decided to pretend they didn't exist, because they weren't Greek enough. So: big bright celebration for Saturnalia, then sleep for two months, living in denial. Thus, the real first month of the year was March. [2/4]

The year still BEGAN in January, they just didn't bother giving it or its short friend names. It went October, November, December, Sleep Off The Hangover, March, April, May... Everyone blames Big Julie and Augustus for naming months after themselves, but that's not quite fair. [3/4]

July and August weren't inserted into the calendar -- they were just renamed from, I don't know, Quinquember and Sexember or something. And good job too. Be grateful that Tiberius didn't follow suit or it would be a trend, and we'd have ended up with Tibember, Caligulober and Claudember! [4/4]

We should have 13 months of 28 days, plus one extra day holiday at new year (2 for a leap year). All months to be named after characters from the Simpsons. Plus we should restart the calendar from what was the 1st Jan 1970 and include a year 0.

It was actually King Pompilius some 700 years earlier who added Jan and Feb but didn’t change the names of the others. The Julian reforms were to make the system work (365+1 leap) Coincidentally pompilius is the term I use to describe extra-pompous people who correct others’ posts. Sorry. 😔 🙏💙🙏

…because the Pontifex Maximus hadn’t done his job of updating the calendar for years. And the Pontifex Maximus was Julius Caesar himself, since he was off campaigning in Gaul (France). Moral of the story: don’t mix religion and politics.

It’s worse than that. During the civil war in the late Roman Republic, Julius Caesar’s enemies tried crossing the Adriatic and all their ships were destroyed in the choppy waters. Because the seasons had shifted relative to the calendar by over a month, further into winter than anyone realized…

No, they changed it before Caesar was even born because they needed to go suppress a rebellion in Spain and they really couldn’t wait for the year to start in March (according to Livy) 😅 “OK guys, it’s New Year already. Give me my legions!”

This makes sense for two more reasons. 1) it sticks the leap day (29 Feb) at the end of the year. Making it easier to understand what day of the week any date falls in any year; and 2) spring (in the north hemisphere, autumn in the south) represents the start of the year. Simplifies the calendar

Okay. I only have a superficial familiarity with Roman history outside of their invasions of the territories of my ancestors (even that doesn't reach much past the surface). I guess I saw two groups of things that happened to months, then jumped to the conclusion that they were related. Mea culpa.

the hack was January/February — they should’ve been called Eleventember and Twelvetember then 7 - Sept-ember 8 - Oct-ober 9 - Nov-ember 10 - Dec-ember ah yes this RFC will be a total hit!

To be fair, it made a lot more sense when the year "started" at the equinox in mid-March. That also put the runty month of February at the end of the year. Which is of course what you meant by "technical debt." Why did it change? I don't remember. Most people don't even know there was a change.

You know this tech debt is never getting resolved. Its just going to get black holed in jira as "dev no sla" till the heat death of the universe

I know English is the least coherent legacy language in existence, but I have my whole business application suite built on it, not to mention my socials and my children. For God's sake tell me it's not going ex support...

of course. The year used to start on 1st of March. Then "Sept"ember is 7th, "Oct"ober is 8, "Nov"ember is 9, "Dec"ember is 10. And Februar got the rest of the unused days, 28 or sometimes 29. Totally logical.

Technical debt? Blame it on leadership as usual. It was all nice until Julius decided to insert a month in his name (July) and then Augustus Cesar couldn't be outdone and added August. This pushed the whole mess forward. Today they'd just do a reorg and lay off a few thousand people.

Hear me out...what if the months were actually supposed to align with the solar calendar. So the beginning of the year would be in March (spring solstice) and the EOY is February, signaling the end of winter? Eh, eh? Then our seasons wouldn't be cut off! That'd be great honestly ☺️
