On the other hand, the robot reacts with empathy, doubling over just like it got kicked in the gonads also. We may not be close to independent robots, but when we do, that empathy will go a long way way to stop them from annihilating us.

To be fair, the vulnerable population are those who won't understand computers very well and there is a certain age at which that's everybody. But it's a lot of non-technical young folks, too, because growing with the internet and computers doesn't mean you understand how they work.
