I beg “No Kings” Americans to discuss a general strike. Break your economy. You can’t be serious about ending this regime while you keep spending disposable income and propping up the economy as a consumer. You wanna break it? Stop buying new things. Repair things. Buy used. Don’t eat at chains.

For four decades, the geniuses on Wall St. have been burning the railroad ties from the track ahead to make their old steam-powered financial locomotive go faster and make them richer in the short term. They're about the run out of track. The crash is coming regardless.

They won’t do this It is the best way to attack Trump but I have little faith in people doing the hard stuff It’s like when they drive into the city to protest climate change and then buy iced coffee in plastic cups They feel like they did good.. but didn’t Ask DiCaprio about his Oscar speech

How about drive the fuck to DC and do something real to change things or just accept your position as a slave. All the protest does is inconvenience other normal people and it doesnt affect the people in power at all.

Been doing for over a year now. Not sure who can afford to keep spending like normal anyway. A lot of people are already using credit cards to buy necessities like groceries. Our economy is broken. It's a metaphorical dead man walking--once people can no longer spend on credit, it will be chaos.

This has to be the next step. Otherwise we just seem like a bunch of unhappy Karens, whining about a president that we don't like

i have been discussing a general strike: The people proposing it have no idea of the consequences: Take Food: Delivered continuously to big cities. several time a day in smaller cities, daily to small towns .. cut those food supplies and you have food riots in a week.. The strike will be blamed.

National strikes always seemed like a European thing. It has a history, & workers have more legal protection there. And unfortunately, as a nation, we're too busy w daily life stuff. We likewise don't really get into Buy American campaigns either. But I agree workers & consumers deserve better.

i eat mostly my own made food. i will work on spending less on purchases that are not urgent. i agree less we spend on goods and eating out will have a real effect on our corporations. they will take the government to task for their lack of retail income.

It's really easy if you're poor like I am. If you aren't, just pretend you are. And every time you DON'T spend that 20 at McDonald's, put it in your President Pussineck is ☠️ party kitty. You'll have a banging good time with those savings.

I agree, but I need a giant list of all the companies I can buy from vs boycott. I have some. But Like now there’s Comcast in our area can I buy from them or not? That’s a mixed bag because they own MSNBC but they have contracts with Peacock, Hulu, and Disney???

70% of US GDP is predicated on personal consumption - stuff we buy. Stop buying and use that power. We need a day of no consumption - a general strike isn't as possible as a consumption boycott.

Are you paying my mortgage? Who's feeding my household if I go on strike? We're chronically ill and our healthcare is tied to that job you want me to lose. Send me enough money to live on and I'll consider a strike.

Don't continue to support Amazon, don't continue to use X or Facebook. Every time you support these tech bros, you are supporting tyranny. It's not difficult to stop using these. I have not used Amazon in 10 yrs. Haven't used X since Musk bought Twitter, and never use Facebook.

Maga doesn't need our money, not when that asshole rides around in a 300-ft yacht that needs another yacht to help direct it. The amount of money these people have is disgusting and we are willingly giving it to them

So is that your excuse to use FB, X, buy a shit vehicle from a human POS? It’s not about bankruptcy Wake the fuck up and stop giving them your money. Why contribute a fucking dime? You want to criticize every drop in the pond? Then let’s hear your solution? Nothing right? Just complain?

💯All the dictator has done for 15 months is make billionaires trillionaires and put us all at risk and profit off our suffering. Depose the fascist regime now. Trump is a dictator. MAGA are Nazis. Ice is the Gestapo. The only words I want to hear from dems/gop is depose the baby raper dictator now.

That should be the next No Kings protest. Not millions in the streets, millions purposely not in the streets, not spending money for a day with the corporate players. spending at local Mom and Pops is allowed.

I truly don’t know. But it is something we can do that might just make even a little difference - no Amazon, no buying, no shopping - & maybe the billionaires will at least be reminded that WE are the ones funding their yachts, their jets, & all their luxuries. It worked for Target. Let’s try!

Yes, it worked for Target and I'd like to see more people boycotting in general (as opposed to one day events). i have a boycott idea and no longform place to write about it but maybe i'll just have to throw it out here in a long thread and see if someone else takes the ball and runs with it... 🤔

We need more than a 'general strike'. It needs to be a lifestyle choice. I haven't eaten at a chain restaurant in decades. I cancelled my Amazon Prime acct. yrs ago. I do most all of my shopping at thrift stores & I buy my food at independently-owned, local stores & Farmers Markets.

I’m in. However, I understand it’s not possible for some people to participate. But many of us can. I’m retired, so I can’t strike, but I can stay in my house- no shopping, no eating out or delivery, no buying gasoline. No online shopping. It will make an impact.

Why doesn't everyone pick one company in an industry where there's competition (eg one of the home improvement big boxes, or one of the fast food chains) and just say "we're boycotting until the Epstein Files are released in full". Seriously, it's a blindingly obvious use of your consumer power.

Perhaps a targeted strike. Stop patronizing any business that isn't locally owned by someone who actually lives in your state if possible.

Please help popularize the concept of pinpoint, impromptu strikes. The powers that be can prepare for general strikes. They can't prepare for strikes that can be called and enacted at any time and in any sector of the economy with absolutely zero advance warning.

Here is the real problem with that. This type of strike would hurt working people well before the elite even feel a little itch. They can outlast it far longer than everyone else. And the people striking will get the blame, turning people to MAGA.

People are willing engage in disruptive actions when the risks of doing them are less than the risks of not doing them. General strikes in the past have been done because cost of living was already unaffordable for many people, and there was very strong neighbors mutual aid systems already in place.

engage.imengage.im

It is dangerous and irresponsible to call for general strikes without mutual aid systems. That just gets people fired and families evicted. Do the hard, boring work of mutual aid in the community, and people will much more interested in striking.

Just reduce discretionary spending by 50% or more. It will make an impact. We already have less demand for goods in the US due to all the deportations and the fewer people visiting or migrating to the US. The average per capita expenditure is $50k/year. The US economy will grow more slowly.

I saw a comment from Someone in France who thought it was amusing that Americans Schedule their ‘No Kings’ protests. ‘In France we just show up in the streets every night until things change.’

Our big trip yesterday was to the nice folks at Crosstown Maple on Blodgett Hill for fresh maple syrup and cider donuts, then over to Midway Diner on 9W in Ravena for the friendliest, best late breakfast I've ever had.

I started doing this in Nov 2016 for obvious reasons. It feels really good and becomes second nature pretty quickly. I hope everybody will join me.

The small market near where I live is run by Trumpsters. The large supermarket is from Massachusetts and I think they have better politics so I’ll avoid some of the large chains, but not all.

Actually, the purpose of the protest march is to do just that! I think enough economic damage has been done that it should peak right around mid terms, but by all means we should do whatever it takes screech the economy by organizing.

Just like they did at the last No Kings protest, Team Trump and the Republicans put paid agitators on the street trying to stir up problems. The masked painter ( in white ) was guarded by a security person to their right They both departed in a waiting SUV and of course this makes great Fox 'news'

1/2 Americans are A) WAY too complacent. We’ve NEVER had to really monitor our government and B) we are apparently allergic to holding men (especially white men) accountable for ANYTHING and C) the vast majority here are one paycheck away from disaster/homelessness/bankruptcy etc.

2/3 Add to that D) when your (shitty) health insurance is tied to your job, and E) there’s ZERO social safety net and F) we’ve DESTROYED community (and vilified it) and G) have a pathological attachment to “independence “ and H) believe deeply that any inconvenience is an affront….

3/3 To ever do a general strike. There’s got to be SOMETHING we will do. I just don’t see striking happening in this culture. I wish it would. I honestly believe it’s going to be violence against the oligarchs that will change this place.

Is on for Friday May 1st. I wonder what would happen if this year all that haven't paid taxes this year file an extension and don't pay a dime and promote it as a public protest? Filing an extension is legal.

Repairing things and buying used is a great idea. It'll heal the economy. Especially for students and others on a tight budget. A general strike would hurt the poorest most. The elite can easily afford to hire chauffeured limousines to pick up groceries for them if delivery drivers go on strike.

May 1st- Based on formula provided by the US Labor Stats 2025: On the low side, the average American spends $165/day If 150 million people participate in a General Strike = $24.75 Billion per day. To put that into perspective: Per Week: $173.25B Per Month: $742.5B It's time to flex our power.

May 1st. And then I encourage everyone to avoid national brands for the entire month. Hit the fat assed fascists in their wallet. The best way to reduce their taxes is to reduce their income

I cook all my meals. Buy local farmer's market produce. I get take out 1 or 2 times a month from a small family owned Teriyaki place in my neighborhood. Life if Good!! Healthier food, too.🌱🌾🥔🥕🧅🥬🌽

There is a MASSIVE spending strike May 1st Spending and no work or school. Until then, do what many of us have been doing for a year now...spend wisely Get the Blue Book Buy local

One of my favorite things about living here in Brooklyn is that I have a choice. I don't have to shop at chains. I have everything I need at local stores within walking distance. Almost all are immigrants and very hard workers, good people. I wish more of the country had more choices.

That's excellent! But I think a lot of people don't realize that every place has a local economy. I live in a rural area, and I love to step outside my comfort zone and stop in at odd places to get things. Maybe not within walking distance, but in this economy, how much stuff can a person buy?

I was a single mom so know how to "live slim"The vast majority of people will pull back on spending because all prices are going up & will stay up until we destroy the Republican regime aligned with fascist Billionaires. The economy will crash within 6 mths due to Trump's insanity & his maga Congress

If we break the economy we hurt small businesses the backbone of our economy Trunk policies already doing that ! I think you may mean break the big corrupt Billionaires stranglehold on us via Bezos Amazon, Zuckerberg's enterprises, Musks Tesla & his wealth via 12 government contracts he was given

I quit buying new things a long time ago. As soon as someone steps up to pay my mortgage and my health care, I'll consider striking. I've cut everything I can. We still need food, prescriptions and shelter.

100% agree. I have stopped shopping at Amazon and Target, cook all our meals, never had a Facebook account and considering paying cash for groceries. We are fortunate to have a small local health food store where we can buy organic and support local farms

The best thing to do is a one day coordinated strike. Buy nothing, go no where. All stores and shops and businesses empty of customers. Everyone call in sick or take the day off. Its stark and effective. They do it in France. The cities are shut down for 24 hours.

The problem is too many people have to work. And they are not the ones spending the money keeping the economy going. What the people with money need to do is stop spending it. Stop buying crap we don't need. Live like our parents and grandparents did.

This. When healthcare is tied to employment, there is very little or no PTO or paid leave, people ration medicine and choose between healthcare and groceries, no worker protections, and people can’t afford a $400 emergency, how in the world are we supposed to do a sustained general strike?

Change won't come without painful and risky effort - it never does. It will only happen when the thought of the status quo contininuing is worse than the thought of what might happen if action is taken. Until that time the majority of people will sit and wait for it to change.

A general strike takes huge determination and matching organisational skills. They’re successful if everyone is overwhelmingly desperate for them to succeed. I honestly don’t think you have the necessary support. But yes, those who can should choose to spend their money where it makes most impact.

No one who needs healthcare to live is going to strike and possibly lose their job and insurance. We're not just bent over a barrel with actual money here. We aren't all young and healthy 25 year olds. Some of us would die without healthcare.

And for god's sakes learn how to protest properly. It's not a part-time thing where you do it once on a Saturday so you don't have to take time off work or inconvenience anything in your life. Learn from the Euromaidan: If you want change, protest *FOREVER*. Altruism is easy. Sacrifice is hard.

I think that’s more of a privilege now. Rent doesn’t get paused for protests. Nothing is ever free. I don’t know many people, if any, that can just freely decide to miss work. & to be honest, not many are willing to sacrifice what little they do have for the possibility of a return to 2012 USA.

All of these needs demands. The protests do not have demands. A general strike would need measurable demands and leaders to determine when those demands have been met. Americans need to learn what modern non violent resistance has looked like in other countries.

What if... ...a consumers union-like movement announced a stop in using credit cards - for six weeks, maybe ten, with a single demand, like 'restore credits for ACA insurance premiums." Banks earned $187billion in 2024 from swipe fees alone. Ten weeks' loss might get bank lobbyists fuming.

Our Main Street economy is already hurting. The way you get thier attention is to consolidate power long term. Need a long term impactful solution. Like cutting the cable cord and streaming services. Stop letting media dictate what is the headlines by putting that power back to the people

Epstein and ending the war in Iran are the two top issues we want resolved. I want congress to vote to limit trump power to find this war. Ultimately I want congress to impeach him for the corruption and self dealing. But I’ll take it one step at a time.

What part of the economy isn't already broken? People are having to use their 401Ks to pay the rent, unemployment is through the roof. Community gardens are necessary, not just nice.
