I think for me the most impactful moment of Spielberg's career was in E.T., when they're at the dinner table and Elliott calls his brother "penis breath" and his mom yells at him but also has to stop herself from laughing

I actually thought E.T. in particular (and Spielberg in general) did a really good job of capturing Americana Zeitgeist. It felt like a real slice of suburban life in the early 80's.

A few years ago, my dad was complaining about kid’s shows today having bad language and being too adult. When I asked him for an example, he said “they say things like penis breath in E.T.” That was his only example of how kid’s shows “today” go too far.

For me, the most impactful moment in ET was when Elliot stands on his fallen classmate in order to kiss the girl in his class who was much taller than him. Thus was a preference for taller women born.

At the time I did not understand the homophobic nature of the insult but I did understand that you might be able to get away with saying bad words if it was funny. And now here we are

i don't even try when i'm working with younger kids lol. they'll still get whatever minor consequence even if i laugh. kids know how rules work (btw if someone's actually hurt, physically or emotionally, it ceases to be funny and the issue is moot)

btw as someone who has talked to kids about many awkward topics -- you can choose between "yup it's funny, let's also learn about it" and "i don't mind that it's funny to you, but it's not funny to me" "that's not funny" never works. that way lies guaranteed failure

When I was a kid, my aunt and uncle had an argument at table. My uncle had thick glasses. And at one point, she : "and you, you have eyes that look like cat's balls" We started laughing. But the funniest was her face when she turned around toward us: confused, she did not understand our laughter. 🤣

I thought about this scene when I had to keep a straight face telling my son that calling his sister "poopface" was ABSOLUTELY NOT FUNNY and also making sure he didn't hear me laughing about it later with my adult friends.

I love Mary's reaction to Elliott and ET's goodbye hug at the end just before he leaves in the spaceship, especially, on watching as an adult, you understand the context about Elliott's absent father and how Mary finally "gets" what his bond with ET was actually about.

Man, didn’t he cut it in the remaster? My church watched GOONIES as an outdoor movie and my favorite part was a mom trying to anticipate and talk loudly over each curse. Only after did I read that Spielberg caught flack for the language upon its release but defended it saying it’s how kids talk.

I went to see E.T. w a few friends, and discussion of that scene after the movie came up. A girl in the group tried really hard to convince us he said, “Peanuts breath”.

Look, I like a good pejorative as much as the next person, but sucking cock is a lovely thing that ought not be made out as a negative. I mean, I have a cock. Getting it sucked is The Goal.
