The US really just doesn't have the architecture to do Dark Souls 3-style eclipses

I mean idk, lots of US cities do have some legitimately artful architecture even today. It's everywhere else that sucks shit. The suburbs, the giant parking lots, places like Dry Ridge Kentucky where it's just walmarts and chain restaurants, etc.

America did at one point gloriously try to distill the various European/gothic traditions into a grandiose new world aesthetic with some interesting results, but sadly most of that effort was bulldozed to make way for America's newest and most important citizen... the car.

Giant walmart parking lots sure do make a cloud covered sky look extra beautiful but they don't really sell the ominous presence of a solar eclipse at all.

We watched the total eclipse in 2024 up here and, even moreso than the sight was just.. vibes? It keeps getting darker and darker, then almost nighttime. Not quite, though. But more than that was the silence. There are animals chittering and squawking, then nothing. For about five minutes. Wild.

Not dark souls, but I did manage to take this shot during the Canadian fires as the over billowed over New England. Kids were playing their weekend baseball game below and their laughter echoed over the hill in a uncomfortably irreverent way

It's true. Funnily enough, America's architecture, if you can really call it that, is perfect for one thing: Fallout. The aesthetic of the nuclear apocalypse. The end of the world. Nothing could be more sad, and more fitting at the same time.
