Try a couple decades of shitty emails ranging from simple insults all the way up to death threats from idiot fanboys who can't handle you giving a game "only" 8/10 and see which one puts more calluses on your soul, dummy. You'd fold in six months or less.

I remember when Gamespot gave RE6 a 4,5 and people kept complaining about it for years. It literally even became a gag on Gamespot videos. That all of then had a commentary about the 4,5 score

a dude got in my twitter DMs with deaththreats because i made a tweet saying i didnt like the Demon's Souls remake's art direction and i had like 45 followers on there lmao saying anything negative about a game is like guaranteed to get weirdos on your ass

D: I don't like the demon's souls remake art either! I got soured early because the devs bitched about the old art and then made the game grey. Let me make my kawaii anime monstrosities gdi! (This to say, you're not alone)

Giving a 6.5 to Armored Core 6 got me dozens of death threats and hundreds of threatening comments. It is ridiculous to think critics aren't constant targets of anger and derision.

I think there are very few individuals who have built such a huge cache of goodwill, only to push it all over a cliff almost immediately. C'mon Sven, it's not too late to shut your fucking mouth.

We had a senior dev on a project once give a short talk about how to handle death threats about the video game we were making. Video games!

I have a theory that The Gamers getting enraged by 8/10 scores stems from the US' really stupid grading system in which 64 is failing and 70 is "barely passing." they are incapable of understanding that 7/10 means "significantly above average, but imperfect" because their mom grounded them in 1992.

Objective scoring and subjective ratings are completely different things. A grading system with a minimum threshold for certification isn't "really stupid." Objectively, a doctor that only knows 64% of essential material shouldn't be a doctor.

I remember EGM (not the best example but still) always had a little blurb in their reviews section that essentially read "reminder that this isn't like your school grades, and a 5/10 means a game is perfectly average, not bad not great"

69 is a D. It's a bad score and usually seen as disappointing, but it's usually not an actual fail unless it's some kind of special class or something, like honors or like, classes for certification of specific skills needed for important jobs etc.

The more I think about it the more I believe review scores are just bad. They're incredibly reductive and invite direct comparison which creates nonsense scenarios. You can't derive a number from feelings or impressions. Not to mention the number itself doesn't even mean the same thing to everyone.

7/10 almost always means average in every review context. Think of it this way: if a game is only doing half of the things it should be doing, how is that average? On average, things should be GOOD. 7/10 is an average score but average doesn't mean meh. On average things tend to be good.

It’s doesn’t help that the median for an average game has gone up ALOT in 20 years, I don’t remember the last time I played a 5/10 that wasnt a steam sale gamble it’s just not something that really happens anymore

“You’d fold” Jesus Christ you talk about video games on webcam you big fuckin baby. Bro thinks he’s a war hero of the gamer wars. You’ve had one of the easiest careers in all of human history holy fuck lmaooo. “I served 2 tours at gamespot and cbsi” type shit. “Shitty emails” lmaooo

Sorry but this is a childish response. You don't think game devs face their share of "idiot fanboys"? You don't think Swen specifically hasn't faced a mountain of criticism over the past couple months? Ever think how fast you'd fold in his job? Get off your high horse.

Try engaging with what he actually said. The context of that screenshot is completely removed after all. It was part of a string of tweets saying he doesn't like when people shit on creators in the "form" of criticism.

I remember a comment reading something along the lines of, “Your father is a race traitor” in the comments section of a news story. I was like, “Bro, I’m a Game Informer intern.” And dang right he was!

I remember the outrage when a Gamespot reviewer gave Cyberpunk 2077 a 7/10 before it launched. I saw very few apologies when those people got to actually play the game for themselves

An 8 is the worst score. It's completely average. That means it's bad. That means me wanting to buy it makes me a bad person. The reviewer is saying I'm a bad person. How dare they! (Imagine being over the age of 8 and still thinking this way)

It was fun when one of the sites I did work for switched from the 10-point scale to letter grades and nobody understood fuckin any of it. You would assume most people reading a game review online would have spent at least some time in a school, but maybe not!

Oh looking over the whole thread this seems like a second-hand crashout over highguard discourse, ending on the much worse take "Please don't complain. Just silently play other things until the corporations notice your lack of compliment instead of a complaint and cater to your unexpressed opinion."

It's such a weird circular logic too, like who then reviews the reviewers of the reviewers? It's just a shallow plea for more kid gloves from a guy who's seemingly either mad about a buncha 6/7s from over a decade ago, or from the only "red" review they ever got back in the 90s from some magazine

If you are comparing angry fanboys complaining about a review to critics evaluating something you worked on daily for five plus years of your life, I think you come out on the less traumatic end. But I don't know why we have to dick measure trauma.

No because criticism is good and useful for media and artists to get better, and death threats and angry emails serve literally no purpose other than to make a sad lonely shithead feel better for five seconds until they remember the gaping hole in their soul

I just don't get how someone around this CEO couldn't just tell him "Hey. Put the phone down and relax a little bit." before he torches all his good will from his company's highly popular game. If they did and he refused to listen, that's even worse.

Sven is right. Reviewers are just clickbaiters nowadays. Their reviews should be audience scored. It's also true for steam reviews etc. read why people down vote games ..it's crazy. It's your job to deal with those emails while avoiding spewing trash for clicks.

I got threats over a 9/10 once, including one that included my address back in the day, and that was BEFORE I came out as trans. And does he not know all the other publishers have spent decades withholding ad campaigns and pre-release copies when they want to be petty like this? Is he new here?

This guy got rid of the AI and thinks that's enough to bring people back to buy the next game, but wait till he learns how people feel about knowing they're gonna support whiny baby CEOs

While I disagree, I think Jeff mentioned somewhere that total score was calculated using some formula, and not a result of an author just giving it out, saying that he, himself, would've scored it lower. That'd be really funny.

A while ago I peaked at the Gamespot thread where people were discussing the TP review. A lot of people concluding that there must be a conspiracy between you and "Micro$oft" because you gave Gears of War a higher score. Thankfully, it produced one of the funniest comments I've seen in my life.

Swen's sentiment is one you share privately with fellow devs in the bar, a polite commiseration between creators, not something you actually believe and post in public

He went black pfp after a day of being made fun of for being an AI guy for two days I think if he had to deal with gamejourno replies I genuinely think he’d kill himself

Baldur's Gate 3 got treated with the softest of kids gloves by critics and gans too! Their critique armor is only bested by From Software now. 1000s of bugs, broken party members and awful performance at launch. Swen is smoking crack or snorting AI.

The moment you call Vincke a "dummy", you not only prove him right across the board, but you demonstrate that "decades of shitty emails" have taught you nothing.
