i am hearing that the s&box people are taking their branch of source 2 and uhhh "rewriting all the systems in c#" and uhhh "removing hammer" in favour of their own level editor. if true it is perhaps the stupidest thing anyone has ever heard of or will ever hear of again

source 2 hammer is a truly excellent, undefeated, probably undefeatable level editor and the only reason anyone would fancy using source 2 or s&box... there is zero chance that someone who would want to replace it understands enough about it to get 5% of the way to imitating it

From what I've seen of s&box it seems like they're trying to compete with Roblox, so I personally wouldn't expect the kind of tightly designed spaces Hammer is capable of to be the standard in a s&box game

Our plan isn't to compete with anyone. We're doing our own thing. We just want to make a cool engine, make cool games, and let developers make money from making cool games. At least that's what my opinion on the whole thing is.

I mostly just mean competing as in occupying a similar niche, since Roblox also tries to let people make games/let the devs make money from it. Even if it's not intentional, devs can ask themselves at some point "should I make my game in Roblox or s&box if I want to reach a large base and monetize?"

As someone who's been playing gmod since I was too young, it is one of those communities that had just as many grooming and chud problems as it did positive experiences and the "letting the cat out of the bag about facepunch being made up of 4chan losers" is a total water is wet for me.

The amount of heartbreak I had when I found out they were like this is insane. I was finally excited to use a new engine and then i see this bullshit and how constant it is in their discord 😭

while we are on it, i also hear they removed source 2's i/o system! i did a blog post about why those are great recently, not really ever surprising whenever anyone doesn't understand their purpose bsky.app/profile/joew...

I spent some of this week making an I/O system for level scripting in Unreal for @sleightofhand.game! I have long had thoughts on why these kick ass. Here's an unusually long blog post on: -why these kick ass -why they are necessary -how mine works -etc etc www.joewintergreen.com/i-o-systems-...

it should go without saying btw but there are good people at s&box unhappy with the rot. who knows, maybe they will try to change it from the inside out. but you shouldn't have anyone at that nobly-naive "maybe i can affect change from inside the institution!" point before you even ship

The entire selling point of this whole debacle was supposed to be The Only Way You’re Ever Getting a Source 2 SDK so, uh, the fuck is happening

I might be crazy but i'm noticing a pattern between the hate for any temporal type of effect in videogame and how it is connected to rightwingers, i guess it stems from how right has this unhealthy obsessions with nostalgia/"stuff used to be better before woke" but damn it happens way to often

garry personally tried to bothsides that shit on the successor to facepunch forums (knockout dot chat) and he got permabanned for it lmao. s&box has the fingerprints of rancid people all over and garry’s fine with it

I watched a video a couple of days ago where somebody repeatedly said other engines (including Godot for some reason?) should be scared of sandbox and I guess they were right but in only ways they never even considered. I was excited to see more open source engines, what an absolute shame.
