"No ones defended this one" my brothers this is what made me like the style

I like in 64/Zero she had a feeling like this prim and proper rich lady who is also a really skilled pilot gave her a different vibe compared to every other character and added something to her dynamic with Falco too. The new one I think removes some of that uniqueness to her in this universe.

Kat's backstory is that she and Falco used to be in a gang together, before Falco joined Star Fox. Kat was always meant to be a rough and tumble character, but didn't look the part at all in the OG game. If anything, Faye (the poodle) in Star Fox 2 fits the proper rich lady description much better.

Kat can't get a break, man. After they finally settled on a design for her in 3D and zero, they redid her entire look again.

Yeah it is less persona that's for sure pink could have still been there though that's not as heavily saturated and was face it furries this is the animal person legit the freaking swirly hair got to go but could have had a pattern in this place though.

I have to be the only person on planet earth who liked the new character design from the beginning. I didn't even know what people were complaining about, even after friends explained it to me.

I mean sure, Katt wasn't the deepest written character, but she DID have a specific appeal, one that was conveyed well through her design, voice and dialogue. I'm not sure what this new one is trying to convey other than "these designers would rather be working on something else"

and like, to clarify, I'm not against character redesigns on principle, my issue here is just a lack of real purpose or meaning behind THIS redesign in particular - same with the rest of the designs.

Honestly it makes me hope they might put some depth in there because she legitimately looks less like the "girl" and more like a legitimate veteran who has had a lot of stuff happen to her and is still trying to hold it together.

I was wondering where this image came from. The Direct only showed her in a tiny communications window (around 10:50 in the Direct). That said, the teeth look kind of weird/irregular even in that footage.

I think this actually accentuates my gripe with it. The designs scream "grungy scrappy mercenaries" but the world outside looks way too clean because its adhering closer to the original game.

i think it's a smart choice. flipping the colors lets her skew closer to the naturalistic style of the rest of the cast while also turning her pink into "highlights" that give her a punk look.

Left: "we need a girl star fox" Right: I would absolutely go out with her for cigarettes and booze. She definitely knows where to get the best weed. There's about a 45% chance we get mugged along the way, and a 65% chance she's the one doing the mugging.

anybody who says the new design is "soulless" or "inexpressive" is out of their mind

I've never played a Star Fox game, but new Katt looks like she's about to take a huff of Arwing fuel and tell me "Revolution is not for the sane." and I am into it like you wouldn't believe.

Same she lowkey looks the best probably because how how heavily she was redesigned to fit the style better. Though with her looking so different I’d rather have had this design on an original character instead of replacing an old one.

YOU STOLE MY POST! xD joking i made a similar post defending our beloved Katt. Shes more soldier looking. less barbie doll. i love how scrappy and grungy she looks. Also. she looks llike a gremlin out of combat i bet lol

I like that she looks like an actual character and not a marketable plushie. This has so much more direction to it I don't get why anyone would hate it

tbh im leaning negative on the style as a whole (more a reflection of my distaste for attempted realism in games than specifically star fox's fault) but it'd be much worse if all the dudes were semirealistic and then the women were standard-issue furries im glad at least shes equally weird

I like how scrappy Katt looks. Like an alley cat almost - which feels pretty correct for a mercenary.

Agreed. This isn't some feline supermodel, she's a scraggly fighter who looks like she practically lives in her cockpit (which, given she doesn't seem to have a base-ship like the Starfox crew, is probably the case).

I appreciate how much more cat-like she looks in here, the original read very wolf-like to me, but I feel like you could still make her scrappy without sacrificing the entire design, maybe at least keep the pink scheme? To be completely fair, her design has never been one to stay lmao

I meant it more in the sense that she looks nothing like her original design whatsoever and looks like a completely new one

Male anthropomorphic characters always just look like the animal, where as female anthropomorphic characters always get overly feminized compared to their male counterparts. Really dig the new design, glad they stayed clear of that.

I'm not a fan of the general art direction, but I actually don't mind Kat's new look at all. Now she looks WAY more like a scrappy gang member Falco used to fw, not just a stereotypical girl whose personality is "girl".

Wha-- I was not expecting people to like this design at all. Frankly, in my opinion, they could have made her look "scrappy" and "like the boys" without hurting her this bad. I understand not wanting her to be overly feminine but like... This isn't it. (but then again I hate the new style so)

Nah, this Katt fuckin' rocks. This Katt hits the mosh pit and tosses your ass out. This Katt slams a whiskey and then hits the highway to see what this car can fuckin' do. This Katt'll kick your fucking ass if you so much as blink wrong at her. This Katt has personality. Old Katt was just "girl."

I've thought about it a lot and I think it just comes down to (if we're excluding the entire style of the game) I don't like her markings. Or, rather, lack there of. It doesn't have to be a lot. Like a forehead marking or something, then I think I'd feel a bit better.

Can't say I'm necessarily a fan of that take. My brother was hooked on that shit and it did horrible things to him. The "scrappy" and/or "smoker" interpretation is a bit better but, uh... Aside from that, after some contemplation, I think it's just an overall style and markings qualm for me.
