he outlines this massive surveillance society under the pretense that ethical, responsible people will be in charge, undermined by his effort to cement a permanent zealot kakistocracy in a country too corrupt to have working regulators or corporate accountability of any kind

What a terrifying and dystopian vision of the future by the guy who is about to own a huge swath of everything on our screens. This is from 2024.

these people are broadly evil but I also genuinely think most of them are genuinely very stupid and stumbled ass first into extreme wealth

like obviously part of him wants to build a giant unethical surveillance apparatus in exclusive service to the extraction class, but another part of him is just kind of functionally fucking stupid about how tech and ethics operate and overlap?

like who is this mythological human presence at the end of the line of AI hyper surveillance imposing any sort of ethics in a country that's too corrupt to function and led by extremists who operate at a fifth-grade reading level? You? You're not qualified and you're going to be dead soon, dipshit.

The amount of privilege in the way he and others like him navigate the world is the root of this problem. He believes this solutions will work because that’s the way the world works for him. It’s very much a “let them eat” cake level of disconnect with the average person and the world they live in.

Why isn't the off the cuff response to this sort of surveillance utopianism "you first." Like, proportionally how much technology is online in the Ellison manse, conveyances and on his own person to ensure he's on his "best behavior" at all times. Why can't Dealbook et al ever deal out that.

“Every cop and citizen will be on their best behavior because they’re recorded 24/7.” 1: No they won’t. 2: They’ll find gaps in the system or it’ll fail in other unanticipated ways. This is like asking a toddler how to build a safe society.

yeah, again, who is this ultra-ethical person at the head of the AI surveillance chain in the world he's helped build? Especially once he's passed on. Brendan Fucking Carr?

The only thing the plantation owners fear, and I mean the only thing, is a peasant mob armed with torches and pitchforks. It's on the order of Frank Herbert Dune race-memory fear for them. That's why they want the total surveillance society. To monitor the peasants.

I think that if you would like to advocate for this you should have to submit to be recorded 24/7 and have it made available to the public. When they say "everyone will be recorded" they definitely don't mean themselves.

they don't intend it to be themselves, but power is fickle like that. And he's enabling authoritarianism, which isn't known for being discerning about the application of this sort of power. Again, I don't get the sense that these men are particularly fucking bright!

This also means whistleblowers will be even more hesitant to come forward, fearing not just corporate retribution but also government persecution, further entrenching the lack of accountability.

Wouldn't this ultra-ethical, omnipotent AI, built with liberal values of individual liberty and fairness, then turn upon its makers and seize their assets, redistributing their resources back into the democratic hands of the citizenry?

I think that might be better than the reality: that most of this tech is undercooked and overseen by pasty weird zealots like Brendan Carr

raging insecurity fused with a weird class advertisement to other rich people that "I can afford to have work done"

Fear of death...and their own mortality and the inability to truly create anything of worth and value from their own minds, or "rib" so to speak. I say this knowing that he has children... It's just the way their brains function. On fear and the 'cover-up' of fear. They share this w/MAGA plebs.
