I don't know that there is a definitive line to cross that makes you say, "I live in a police state now" but when masked gunmen can routinely brutalize the public, citizen or immigrant alike, with impunity, you have reached that point.

El-Sayed on Trump's cognitive tests: "I went to medical school...In my neurology unit, I would have to give that MoCA exam...The only people that you give a MoCA test to are people who you worry may have cognitive deficits. By definition, if you're taking one of those tests, something's wrong."
I am the book reviews editor at the Journal of International Business Studies, and I'm just putting my hand up to say that we never use AI in our peer review process.
How can AI support researchers in peer review?
Springer Nature and Google DeepMind are partnering to co-design an AI peer review assistant that helps reviewers navigate manuscripts and focus on where their scientific judgement matters most.

Lula:
"We had to overcome foreign interference through digital platforms, which we will have to regulate. A crime in the digital world must be treated the same as a crime in the real world.
We cannot have monstrous companies earning millions... not paying taxes... wanting to steer elections."

The lessons from Brazil and Serbia?
Don't concede one inch of ground to the far right.
Don't appease.
Don't triangulate.
Don't grovel.
Don't say they have "legitimate concerns".
Mobilise your base, and fight them with all the democratic means at your disposal.

Failed to stop inflation? That’s letting Trump off the hook.
Trump CAUSED price increases. His stupid war is why fuel prices are sky-high. Everything else costs more because of that.
Trump promise to bring down costs, but inflation is still outpacing paychecks. With the midterms a week away, Democrats are trying to tap into voters’ frustration in the midterms.
From Zelenskyy. Patriot interceptors that could save innocent lives are sitting in European countries for weeks, which they paid for, unable to be transferred to Ukraine because Hegseth refuses to sign off.
I just want to name that people overcame this. Even against a stacked deck, the good fight is worth it. Win or lose, it's worth it. And sometimes the good guys win.
Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted
With 83% of the vote counted nationwide, Lula has stretched his lead to 2.8 million votes.
That's a lead of 51.4% to 48.6%.
That puts him on track for a victory that could be larger than his 1.8% win four years ago, which would be an immense comeback. He's even up in Minas Gervais now, by 0.6%.
Lula has taken the overall, countrywide lead back.
With 62% of precincts counted, he is ahead 50.6% to 49.4%, which is an edge of roughly 900,000 votes.
He is also getting the shift he needs (compared to the first round) in virtually every state that has reported most of the vote.

In May 2026 Intercept reported that Flávio had negotiated funding for Dark Horse with banker Daniel Vorcaro, the former head of Banco Master, who was under investigation in the Banco Master fraud case. According to the report, Flávio sought up to R$134 million (2025) (US$23.96 million) for the film.
Flávio Bolsonaro initially denied the report, but later acknowledged having sought private sponsorship from Vorcaro for what he described as a private film about his father.

Fascinating to see this morning how major US corporate media are simply ignoring this story. They don't want to report it. Indeed, they're afraid to do so.
Trofimov is correct: the key takeaway from the FT's blockbuster story is that the Trump family and cronies were exercising direct private control over this massive Alaska project, and they were using that control to benefit the Kremlin. Plain as day. But NYT couldn't understand what was happening.
