went kind of long on this one, but I have a lot of percolating thoughts on journalists who continue to use that dogshit platform, and the weird demonization of Bluesky by AI boosters, engagement hounds, and billionaires unpleasantly inconvenienced by political reality

Newton's defense of his return to Twitter is just kind of sad and predictable Gruber's glow up of Twitter is just trolling, silly, tone-deaf gaslighting, and utterly disqualifying

I don't get the demonization of Bluesky just because it's not the place to boost your AI. There are many other places. I wouldn't go near X, but go to LinkedIn if you want to see people bragging about how they're delegating everything to AI agents. Take a seat on Caltrain between SF and Palo Alto.

I really loved Hard Fork and paid for Casey's newsletter, Platformer. No more. He made such a huge deal about using Ghost instead of Substack to host Platformer cause Nazi's. I guess doing the right thing went poof once that sweet, sweet NYTimes money was gone. I unsubscribed and won't go back.

If all they have is a burner account on X to report on whatever crazy shit Elno is posting, then it makes sense for some. If they're actively participating in the discourse there, then they're part of the problem!

The Gruber piece was particularly tone-deaf. The one thing to add is there is a need for some people to still access content on X despite the fact it is an awful place. As a cyber professional I need to access important discussions on LLMs and cryptography that only occur on X.

I admire your thoroughness in keeping all the links intact in your quotes. :) (Gruber's link on the word "refuse" in "refuse to check prior assumptions" is to a post on my blog.)

Think it's worth reinforcing that this passage, alone, illustrates that Newton definitely does NOT have to post on X. He's doing great without it!

“they falsely believe that propaganda can't work on them.” I don’t think I’ve ever thought of this before. I think in Newton’s case this is right on.

There is a lot of dogpiling when one says anything positive or even ambivalent about any AI usage here (or Mastodon, my preferred place for tech people). I don't feel like it's a place one can discuss AI in anything like a nuanced way. But, that's not worth joining the Nazi child porn forum over.

I made a choice to stop using X when I posted this very picture, and it was censored because Elon‘s skin is as thin as tissue paper. He apparently thinks this picture makes him look bad, so I wonder why he did what he is shown doing. I will not tolerate being censored, least of all by Mr Free Speech

The amount of alleged adults whose reasoning for returning to twitter was "some people said mean things to me on another app" is genuinely saddening. I guess the internet really is serious business for some people.

What always gets me is that, relatively speaking, few people use X (or any text-bases social media site) but they keep acting like it's representative of society writ large. Like, twice as many people use LinkedIn every month and yet these guys don't write think pieces about them.

as disappointing as this is, and i don't really accept this excuse to return with all his influence, at least he tried, for a while. and quite substack, which most didn't. there's people like cory doctorow that i mostly respect, but didn't even try leaving x, giving long winded rationalizations

and almost everyone it seems still uses instagram. and whatsapp. run by one of the worst people in all of history. there's the argument that we're all being held hostage by these platforms but it's people like newton that have the ability to shift opinion on tech. just try harder.
