This is K2-18b. It’s a planet outside of our solar system, about 2 1/2 times the size of earth, orbiting a small red dwarf star. The James Webb space telescope spent time studying this planet via spectroscopy and determined it has gases in its atmosphere that are only created through biology!

Two gasses only created by life here on Earth... But Hycean Worlds differ from Earth. So a standard scientific process of presenting all competing alternatives to life to see if they can be ruled out is indicated.

Of course I'd read the story. Just seemed to me that you kind of overstated the info in the report. I'll be thrilled the day we find any life form elsewhere (as we know it: there could theoretically be some we can't currently perceive). I'm sure there is, was, or will be other life in the universe.

Earth 2.5? I’ll need to lose some weight before I go there. I imagine the gravity allows for different looking inhabitants. Is aging a product of time. If time is slower would we age slower, or would it seem the same even if aging was slower?

Even if we could live to send something that could reach them in however many hundreds of thousands of years, they might not develop any lifeforms unbalanced enough to become like humans in scientific progress to understand what was sent, and I'm certain we won't be around when it's seen even if.

Okay, fine but please leave the damn planet alone, and not go and fuck it up like we've already done ours with no way back to redemption from the climate crisis that the future generations are going to bare the brunt of our past generations deeds. Not that we have any hope to reach there 🤤 🤞🤬🤔😋🙏

Sadly even reputable media sources are ignoring that life on K2-18b remains unlikely, preferring to sensationalize that remote possibility. The detected chemicals can be produced without life, the planet is quite inhospitable, including likely being tidally locked and more like Neptune than Earth.

We have good reason to be excited by the capabilities JWST is demonstrating and the discoveries these will make. But I worry about the current quality of science reporting. Society seems to be losing the ability to be skeptical; failing to examine the evidence behind extraordinary claims.

Very true, and we’ve had numerous false positives in the past in terms of biological signatures. But the detected gases have only been reproduced in lab environments, not in a natural environment. So that’s why I think it’s rightfully a reason to be excited, but cautiously.

Isn't the very fact that it is an alien planet and therefore unfamiliar, enough reason to say that there's lots of potential ways that we could be wrong about those only occurring due to life? I feel like "those gasses are only produced by biology *here on Earth*" is a pretty important distinction

Provisional science cannot claim authority over reality, at best it can only provide fuzzy hints. Science is a game of "let’s pretend," played with symbols and sensors. Its power lies in utility, not truth. To mistake physics/maths for reality is to worship the finger pointing at the moon.

"Hey, did you know that empirical science and mathematics don't actually describe the world with real accuracy?" "Really? Who told you that?" "A famous scientist! Anyway, that's why we shouldn't trust science! 🤪💦"

I mean not really. A LY is 1 full earth year, and because space is a vacuum an object could just coast there, the issue would be sustaining life to make it there

It could be bio signatures from what we know from life on earth. But it is also possible that we observe yet unkown chemical processes not coming from life forms at all.

Isn't "has" mildly optimistic given the age of the information? 124 light years? Light year is 5.88 trillion miles? 729.12 trillion miles? <-ai> Mental image of mildly anthropomorphized Fitbit with its eyes welling up in religious awe as it tries to calculate the number of steps.</-ai>

Yes. They have also detected transmissions from the planet warning its inhabitants not to travel to America. "Best just to fly past Earth as fast as you can and keep the doors locked."

K2-18b is +/- 124 light years from Earth. If you are a creature on K2-18b looking at Earth today you are seeing it as it was in the year 1901. Travelling at 15-20% of the speed of light it would take a spacecraft around 800 years to reach K2-18b from Earth. Space is very big.

The way I explain that is: "If we could get to 1/10 light speed, we could reach the moon in ~13 seconds. However, not counting the speeding up and the slowing down, the nearest star would be 40 years away."

Glad so many found this post interesting. The larger point is we should really stop fucking up this planet because there really aren’t any great alternatives.

Agree we should stop hurting earth b/c this is where we live regardless of what’s out there. That said, our primitive asses on this one rock isn’t all there is living in the universe, so I think there has to be great options that we haven’t discovered or can’t get to - yet. :)

GREAT ALL THE VERY RICH IF IT'S LIKE EARTH WILL FIGHT TO BUY IT LIKE THEY DO WITH EVERYTHING AND FINALLY THEY WILL RUINED IT UNLESS SOME CLEVER PEOPLE ARE ALL READY ON IT WHO ARE CLEVER THEN US AND WILL SEND THEM BACK TO EL SALVADOR JAIL ? they know all ready earth and how stupid the human race is 😓

It is possibly inhabited but there’s evidence those gases can be non-biologically generated. Conversely, it seems the non-biological generation simply doesn’t occur on Earth’s surface 🤷‍♂️

Great idea if he joins himself too, I feel these women get attacked so much more viciously then the previous commercial flight with Bezos on it. We don’t need such people on the planet regardless of gender and at least Kary Perry gave us a few fun songs (tastes vary).

We could pack in all of the billionaires and send them on their way. Sadly, they would be replaced on Earth in short order. That’s the problem with our economic system. We breed greed. Still, I’ll help with the loading.

I did not intend to say that it was. The gas seen on this exoplanet can be reproduced in laboratory environments. But we don’t see it naturally occurring in nature, which is the reason for the excitement. Much more testing and analysis and observation is needed.

Ok, lets build a rocket to take a look, if we can settle down there. Oh shit, it takes 3.100.000 years to travel there and same amount of time back, if there is enough fuel available. And coming back, life on earth may be extinct already.
