Yeah, I'm glad I no longer associate with the people I used to know who would go on and in about Gamer Gate and DEI. I'm a much emotionally healthier person because of keeping those people out of my life.

It's highly doubtful, and unfortunately the current political climate may only embolden such riffraff - but one always likes to hope for two distinct possibilities: - that they wake up and actually change, atoning for their past - or that they never succeed being so evil, hateful and disgusting

The common thread is anti-intellectualism. It's been on the rise for a very long time but it's becoming more brazen and more confident. People seem to take pride in not understanding sociology, psychology, climate science, medicine, etc. They think it's resistance to plug their ears.

True so means it run revealing a government funding "news" outlets against said gamergate. Think about how it furthered your agenda. That denied having or doing and how pursued it to cause Gamergate and the long, deep, animosity this lead to. Both prepared the Siege Perilous. hoes mad not seat it

I need to be adamant here. Gamergate didn't cause Trumpism. But rather it was part of a greater neo-fascist movement that did contribute to it. Gamergate was just the most visible ones. This is all connected to white supremacists and other 'conservative' groups seizing Twitter through force and spam

don't disagree necessarily but i think it was just such a powerful and "safe" recruitment tool for the alt-right that it really bolstered their numbers during the early rise of fascism on social media because its just videogames right! its not *real life*

I remember the Twitter and the overall internet of the early 2010s. There was a huge push towards left-leaning ideas and inclusion. But eventually fascist individuals and groups started to adapt.

I'd say the earliest sign of this that I've experienced was the reactionary take over of the atheist/skeptic movement. Though to be fair it was an even more vulnerable group than video game community to begin with.

I remember when this happened. At the time I was still shedding my southern US conservative upbringing. So many people I followed on YouTube turned out to be total pieces of crap. It was a very important lesson and helped me see, over time, GG for what is was.

Problem is the left has never really learnt to combat it. Getting lost in petty battles, on the back foot explaining things, having to defend what could be better. It all comes down to quickly exploiting perceived weaknesses, while liberalism chooses slow progress. Quick radical change is the cure.

eternal posting is of course a leftist problem but the bigger problem is there is no longer any mechanism in place to stop online fascism from spreading/being explicitly encouraged, because the social media is owned by the fascists/fascist-bootlickers

I’m so glad the NYT did the Everything is Gamergate piece because when I talk to off-line folks about this I sound insane until I point it out then, all the sudden, because the NYT did a big feature it has validity and backing.

Hey ! Could you please share a link/the exact title, or even the date of publication for that piece please ? I was talking about it to a friend who's an outsider to "gamer" internet the other day, and I sounded like a lunatic trying to explain all this without a piece to rely on 😬

It’s a massive spread from 2019. Def recommend sharing it because the production alone shows the gravity behind it, even if some of the contributors (Mrs. Wu in particular) have some questionable takes, it drives home how real and damaging Gamergate was/is. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Thank you so so much ! (god the NYT search engine is garbage. It doesn't bring it up even when inputting the exact title) It is frightening that a piece from 2019 could already establish the connection between Gamergate's ideology and methods to the rise of the Alt right and the Trump election.
