I have had many interactions with high ranking fire department folks over building design and left those meetings absolutely baffled at how uninformed they were on actual building safety

People somewhat reasonably assume that the rules governing our built environments are built on careful assessment of the best available science and rigorous analysis of tradeoffs but in reality it's like 85% vibes.

Yeah i have brought this up before too and asked “why do you need a semi truck for a toaster oven fire?” And they got mad at me. Especially when I asked “how do they fight fires in Rome?” When they demanded huge street widths and turning radii

There is a long history from the 1920s to 1950s of toxic chemical exposure limits determined using 85% vibes. Once they are in place, they are sticky because the standard of proof required to change them is far higher than the standard used to initially set them.

“The standard of proof required to change them is far higher than the standard used to initially set them” is a universal urban planning phenomena of everything. A toddler’s behavior of asking “why” repeatedly could bring the whole thing crumbling down.

Not really. It was Jane Jacobs who asked why. Change waited 50 years for a political movement. Zoning etc outlived their ostensible rationale because they existed to elevate homeowners' social status and (secondarily) wealth.

And sometimes the vibes are miasma theory

Let’s take a look at how early plumbing in Victorian apartment buildings in Scotland were designed based on disproven medical pseudoscience. 🧵

I mean this is true about most things. See: Doctors who refused to wash their hands even though it was proven it was killing people. Humans are very bad at re-assessing their priors. We're supposed to learn that skill in school, but school is really bad at that, too.
