These kinds of human scale, mixed-use Midwest dive bars are illegal to open and operate in most American neighborhoods.

My lady used to live above one, it’s the worst, but then conversations you’d hear at 1am were great. Also, these places remind me of Billy Rays over on MLK.

I live next door to a Portland bar, and across the street from another. Ones a dive, the other is more of a family pub. Best neighbors I’ve ever had, because they respect the late night noise restrictions.

Great thing about living in Chicago (as well as the burbs!). Even if you don't drink, bring the kids to watch the game during the day, play some board games, do trivia night... Less looking at screens solo at home, more chilling with ppl.

We visit those around Chicago. I live in Florida, and we used to have one in our neighborhood, but it's been closed for about a year. It was on the trolley line... the trolley line they closed in 1947. Some things used to make more sense.

Arriving in Grantchester UK, (Cambridge) I immediately understood the importance of the Blue Ball pub two doors down. An established, cozy bar, where people know each other, with dogs under the table, is a joyful thing.

Better zoning, first. And in plenty of places, more relaxed liquor licenses. For example, in Montana, a license generally costs $500k because it is tied to gambling machines so they get bought up by casino conglomerates. Small restaurants and new neighborhood bars can basically never get one.
