The fact that the only way to meaningfully lower housing costs requires letting capitalists make a lot of money building expensive new homes kind of breaks a lot of people’s brains.

Not really "a lot of people" so much as economic leftists, who are a minority in real life but disproportionately represented on BlueSky. They tend to hate the rich more than they love the poor.

Given the highly cyclical nature of the housing industry, to meaningfully reduce housing prices we will also have to let a lot of capitalists go bankrupt.

“The number of construction firms peaked at 896,000 in the third quarter of 2007, and bottomed out at 738,000—a figure that was not reached until the first quarter of 2013.”

it's not the only way, just the only way acceptable to u.s. libs. they shudder at the thought of building state capacity/council home style legislation. YIMBY != being pro property developer. easy dunks on nimby leftists (though rly the nimby cohort is rightwing) r largely disingenuous.

i mean, this was vetoed, but i don't mind conceding in part. looks like there's a newer version in committee too, AB-11. shout out alex lee. maybe delaying for after newsom's out in the hopes of not getting vetoed? cool stuff. wouldn't class this as standard u.s. liberal moves though, honestly.

And it's made things a lot shittier because my wife has family there and AirBnBs are a lot more expensive when we visit. There's a way to do this without enshittifying services people actually use. Build more housing.

My point is that a model of housing stock that doesn't take into account housing that is lost from the housing stock doesn't accurately reflect what is going on. If we want to increase housing stock, then that is about maintaining existing housing as residences as well as adding new housing.

If you think developers are making too much money building homes, you should raise taxes on their incomes instead of imposing de facto taxes on new development.

i think the way to solve this is to make rich people pay taxes

i yearn for the day when we decide it's good to pay taxes, and it's good for rich people to pay more taxes. rich people are acting so weird because no one wants to make them pay taxes.
