I don’t think non physicians realize how for real physicians, vaccines is a controversy like flat earth or creationism or birds aren’t real "No true Scotsman" actually holds here it's hard to really describe how baffling this is, how frustrating its been to see grow and how high the price will be

Not a physician. Equally baffled, as someone who has rejoiced every time my kids have been able to receive a new vaccine, and who has counseled/cajoled/convinced many, many people to get a variety of vaccines. From COVID to flu to HPV to TDap.

I didn’t realize this until I dove into the literature during med school and holy crapola. Formal research training has only further cemented this impression. The bar for vaccine safety is (appropriately) set to be insanely high—higher than for literally anything else we do.

Research immunologists are big fans, as well, in my experience. And I think I speak for all virologists as saying they are pretty a-okay with us, too (the *viruses* were less enthusiastic).

Are there any numbers on how many docs out there are AV? It seems to be a common talking point for AV folks that there are so many docs who are AV. Would be great to have some figures to throw out to combat that.

i dunno but something like 96% of physicians got at least 2 initial COVID shots and many physicians would argue in good faith that being antivaxx is effectively disqualifying for being a legit physician

It is SUCH a good video essay. Every time I watch it, i find details about how stunningly awful and immoral Andrew Wakefield was that I had blanked from my mind just to cope. - and I’m glad HBomberguy goes so far out of his way to credit Brian Deer, the journalist who uncovered so much of it.

It’s a reflection of past public health successes. Vaccines are easy targets for spurious associations because exposure is nearly ubiquitous. 99% populationvaccination rate -> “99% of people with X were vaccinated! MAKES YOU THINK…”

Maybe it's exactly because they're not lucrative? Yes, pharma companies make vaccines but there's no massive lobby to push back against the quackery. That, and antivaxxers are adults who likely had all their childhood vaccines, so no consequences for themselves.

Children will die. I've treated kids in the ED whose parents have had children die from vaccine preventable diseases. One parent asked if we could vaccinate their other kids right then and there. It is tragic that SM is used for such evil.

it’s hard to overstate: -how beneficial vaccines are -how massively overwhelming the evidence is showing no link between vaccines and autism -how impossible it is that RFK will somehow “find the cause” (at all, let alone in his first year) -how much RFKjr want to get rid of childhood vaccines

No I think it's the other way around. Non-physicians know vaccines are miraculous and can't understand how someone could be fooled into believing otherwise. It's terrifying. While physicians are familiar with routine patient hesitancy. So not as terrifying/mystifying.

It was once controversial that a heat engine could be used to power a vehicle. Now, however, there are tens of millions of cars beetling about. Imagine what sort of crank you would have to be to express skepticism over gas powered cars. That's how bizarre vaccine skepticism is.

It's rarely mentioned how this whole edifice is built on and drives stigmatising autistic people. It says my way of being is reducible to tragic damage. It nullifies my neurology, says I'm not different but defective. This isn't only a threat to public health, it's also an insult to autistic people

Yes. This. The whole platform boils down to the assertion that anti-vaxers would prefer their kids die of preventable diseases than even FICTIONALLY "risk" being autistic. It's not just ignorant, it's absolutely dehumanizing to autistic people in an incredibly overt way.

Some of us do realize. I have zero respect for any so-called physician who’s not 100% in favor of vaccines. I can at least have some sympathy for parents without medical or science background who’ve been scared by misinformation campaigns, but physicians 100% know better.
