This should be a bigger story. More than 15,000 American farms shut down in 2025.

Vote wiser, farm more efficiently, change the subsidies systems, encourage innovation (cea) instead of planting hectares of maize and poor soil management. Farmers are some of the most stubborn and awful people I’ve had the displeasure of working with. Can’t wait to automate them out of the market.

The American Farm Bureau has warned that rising costs, falling margins, and policy decisions in Washington are pushing family farms to the brink.

At the same time, Republicans in Congress cut over $1 billion from programs that helped schools and food banks buy food directly from local farmers, strengthening local agriculture while feeding children and families.

This is the plan. The fascists do not plan to feed very many people, only themselves. They are trying to consolidate the masses and leave the countryside bare and devoid. You can control the masses with a greater ease.

We often think that food magically appears in our stores and on our table, never thinking about our American farmers. They are one group of " essential workers" that need our help and attention the most. Thanks @mikelevin for spotlighting their plight under Trump.

I am sorry for all the farmers who did not vote for Republicans. This isn't just on Trump alone, it's also thanks to all those Republicans who have the majority in House & Senate, and who sat back and let Trump do this.

Is there a list? I’d love to know if any of these are located along I-5 in central California. Land of pro-Trump billboards we all have to endure when driving up and down the state.

And the vice president with his puppet -master Peter Thiel are running an “investment group” that sells people “shares” in farmland. Acre Trader. No conflict of interest at all…..

I would guess these are small, family run farms. These farms are small businesses and they are affected, like all small businesses in the U.S.,by all the terrible economic policies of the Trump administration. The largest cost increase to these farmers is the loss of their health insurance tax credit.

serious question. why sld anyone care? consolidation by the big monopolies have destroyed countless small businesses. what’s so special abt farms? local dept stores were killed by malls/walmart. locals restaurants were killed off by fast food. why should taxpayers try to prevent it for farms?

Because farms supply food to feed people. We can live without many of the things that mega-corporations sell to us, but food is difficult to boycott. There are enough mega & monopoly businesses in the food supply chain, adding farms to that is not beneficial to the bulk of the population.

Those farms didn’t just shut down. They went broke - and now massive agro-conglomerates are buying them for pennies on the dollar. Exactly as the Billionaires wanted. I feel so bad for every hardworking farmer who voted for him, they got Trumped.

"AgWeb...reported that 'the U.S. ag economy enters 2026 in a clear crop-sector recession, but the deeper crisis is one of confidence. High input costs, weak prices, policy uncertainty and eroding trust in data have pushed many producers from planning for profitability into fighting for survival.'"

Yes but, 15k isn't out of line with the 8-year trend shown by the stats. Some years fewer farmers quit, some years quite a few more. A long-range trend, to be sure.

From the table you posted, there's only one year in the last seven where that number was significantly lower. That might be why it isn't a bigger story.

It's devastating. Contrary to popular misunderstanding--and some lies promoted by agribiz pals in the administration, "Almost all farms in the United States (96 percent) are family farms and they account for the majority (83 percent) of the value of farm production."
