Revisiting some of the times I caused chaos on twitter because of my Spicy Arrakis Takes. 🤣 I'm like some irresistible lure to angry Dune fans. lol Even when I'm joking about how they all think I'm Wrong About Dune they showed up to melt down. (yes I spelled mediocre wrong pretend it's art)

But this is the correct take on Dune. (A friend and I have a running joke about how Men Do Not Understand Dune but they sure do think they do. Frank Herbert is included in Men Who Do Not Understand Dune.)

I can't exactly argue with this, but I think it's important to note that everyone else was also bad. I've always thought the thesis was that competing theocracies and dictatorships are a bad idea, and governance by magic mushroom vision is even worse.

"Let's indoctrinate people into religions centering our eugenics cult and deny them outside education for generations, that can't possibly blow up in our faces." 🙄 Also Leto II Wormface was an excellent critique of "Effective Altruism" before it was invented, because nothing is truly new.

Oh! That’s a take I haven’t heard - I’m gonna have to think about that for a while. The thing I enjoy most about the Dune books is how effectively it makes you think about the analogies and parallels to the real world. It’s been a while since I’ve read them - probably time to do that again.

Essentially, it's searching for a circumstance where Leto II is justified, and it's only if his vision is correct, otherwise, do not, do not do that shit. Also, even if it is, is it worth it man, is it really worth it to save humanity on that long a timescale if you have to become the worm tyrant?

Eventually. I think the old movie, and the early 00’s sci-fi channel mini series may have colored it too, until I was older. Neither of them did much to give it the depth and perspective to make that as clear, and I’m sure they all overlapped in my brain until I circled back in my 20s.

Thankfully, we live in the dumbest timeline, so if Dune 3 is profitable, whichever conglomerate owns the studio will greenlight a second trilogy and we'll finally get Actually, What the Fuck the big screen adaptation it so richly deserves.

I always thought Herbert understood Dune pretty well, and he wrote Dune Messiah to make his point clearer to all the people who didn't understand Dune.

One of Herbert's big points was that messiahs are bad. Paul isn't bad because he's Paul, he's bad because he's the Kwisatz Haderach and the Mahdi. It's his actions as those things that make him literally worse than Hitler, a comparison he makes himself.
