@hildur.bsky.social For ask an Icelander day, I want to ask: "are Icelanders this dumb?"
If George Soros really wants to put money on the other side of the scale, he should just open a company selling incredibly dangerous, high-end luxury items, and watch rich dipshits Darwin themselves. "These new arsenic diamonds glint in a way the normal diamonds don't."
I hope the new tesla roadster is real and legal because at least one of these dipshits is going to kickflip it into a tree

Great news, @markscrivens.bsky.social : Golden, BC has rescinded its earlier vote to secede from the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) wrt timezones. Rather than align with BC, it will follow the larger district in aligning on ABT. A timezone-creating schism has been averted!

The old line that analytic philosophy is answering questions that come naturally to toddlers via methods that come naturally to lawyers remains undefeated.
It is sorta a funny thing about philosophy that the questions are inherently fascinating and exciting—there’s a reason people wind up talking about this stuff in dorm rooms—and the best methods we have for investigating them involve being as tedious and pedantic and boring as possible

The Internet at its best: a bystander to an information superhighway car crash digs through the wreckage and reconstructs what actually happened, which is never what people arguing about it in the first place thought it was.
out it goes: my long post about Rachel Hope Cleves's claim that Tillie Walden plagiarised her book. It's long because Cleves's claim is much, much more bizarre than it looked on first reading. I'm not going to bury the lede here. Cleves's claim does not hold up. buttondown.com/thene/archiv...

Ukraine just dismissed both its defense minister and its top general, but the real fight wasn't about personalities. It was about a basic question they couldn't agree on: What does winning the war against Russia actually look like? meduza.io/en/feature/2...

It says an enormous amount about the Royal Navy in the late Victorian period that they could essentially build HMS "Fuck That One Ship In Particular" as and when required.
Powerful and Terrible (1895) were 14,000 ton protected cruisers designed to hunt down and destroy the Rurik, a Russian armored cruiser designed as a commerce raider. Designed for a speed of 22 knots, and long range, each ship carried two 9.2 inch and twelve 6" guns. #NavalHistory

The Orange is giving so much of itself today: "Cut all the unnecessary meetings and only allocate the minimum viable time to communicate. Then everyone will be listening." @markscrivens.bsky.social as a lawyer, you probably have thoughts on what constitutes the "minimum viable time to communicate"?

A very astute (and upsetting!) piece that touches on four scary cultural trends: 1) The demand for spelled-out moral clarity in stories 2) A growing inability to understand different types of narratives 3) The "customer's always right" version of fandom 4) The growth of fandom as a social identity.
