So much of the pandemic was us finding out life actually could be easier and better and more accessible, and then watching them peel every scrap of that back out of our hands & lives, often for incoherent reasons. (return to office!)

all else aside, I think this was the start of a shift for a lot of people- realizing their government was absolutely capable of helping them, but actively choosing not to

We’ve only barely acknowledged any of it, much less gained any measure of peace. Not even counting the people who feel like they were justified in dismissing the whole thing because they’ve lied to themselves so hard.

It was the first time in my life that I had a full month off work since I was 14. I felt bad bc the world was falling apart, but I was doing great. Also noticed this about those pandemic checks…thrift stores and pawn shops were picked clean. Giving poor people money def stimulates the economy.

We have the government we deserve. A lot of Americans believe that if you need help it's your own fault and you should be punished for it...even though many of those same people will find themselves needing that help and begging for sympathy when they can't get it.

Absolutely, the return to office push is such utter nonsense. The only reason to want us back in office is surveillance which is utterly unnecessary, so they just shout "collaboration!" while doing jazz hands and ignore anyone who disagrees.

There *WAS* another reason behind "back to office" and that's because the corporate real estate market was about to crash like 2008 on steroids, because companies were downsizing offices and buildings sat empty. Rich people would have lost a lot of investment money, so NEOLIBERALS TO THE RESCUE!

Surveillance and also to justify real estate purchase and leasing decisions--but that's also a stupid reason. It's not the employees' fault a corporation suddenly finds itself paying too much for office space.

Yeah, it's mostly because the narcissists and sociopathic CEOs running most companies need to be able to look over their collection of minions & suck self esteem & emotional energy from any of them on demand. AND how much of their investment portfolios contain overvalued commercial real estate.

In our organization upper management jumped to the conclusion that the drop in productivity at the beginning of the pandemic was due to people goofing off. The steep learning curve to use new tech, the limited bandwidth in external and internal networks were ignored. The narrative was baked in.

In many software organizations (where I work) IME there was no decrease in productivity and was often an increase. But the push to office still remains for no rational reason.

As a software developer, most of my in office jobs have been a 30 to 45 minute one way commute which means 1-2 hours per day risking my life in traffic to go to a poorly climate controlled building with migraine inducing fluorescent lights and constant distractions while i work alone at a desk

The mental weight of watching society solve so many accessibility problems when "healthy" people needed it, and then rip that back away while ignoring an ongoing health crisis that made life MORE limited and dangerous for those with disabilities? Hard to fully express!

We really went through the global collective trauma of a mass death event, where almost no one in earth doesn't know someone who died, and instead of sitting with it for 30 seconds we were asked to memory hole the entire thing while making up for lost time by working 3x as hard for barely as much.

The wild thing about all the economy talk is that I often feel like I'm well-off but when I Google median incomes we have not hit the median in a couple years, we just live incredibly modest little lives with an $800 mortgage and one car and no trips or vacations or anything.

I always feel like a psychopath when I say this, but the early lockdowns saw me experiencing better mental and physical health than I had in years. Better work-life balance, more energy, ironically better quality of work. All because the anti-covid measures suit my depression/anxiety combo better.
