Creating with malicious intent to prevent citizens voting. The same bullshit they pulled in the UK a few years ago that disenfranchised 400,000 or so older voters, and people who neither drive or have a passport.. around 20% of the eligible population.

My explanation to a woman telling everyone “Get a Real ID. What’s the big deal?” I’m glad you could get your Real ID with little hassle. Unfortunately, not all Real IDs prove citizenship—depends on the state.

It’s pretty likely any woman who took her husband’s name when they married now has a name that doesn’t match her birth certificate. She needs her birth certificate and her marriage license.

Certified copies, more hassle, more expense, more potential to prevent an eligible voter from exercising her constitutional right to vote. And all of this is besides the point.

Yes, I believe that’s true, if you have one. (I’m lucky. I do.) Unfortunately, millions do not, and with a price tag over $120 it is prohibitive to many these days. Requiring people to spend money in order to vote would be considered a Poll Tax, no?

You wanna see some real fire 🔥 tell women they can't vote anymore. The bill is ridiculous. I'm registered under my married name, which I've had for decades. My license (fl) has a gold star which means we brought our birth cert and any other dox needed.

Another reason why no women should ever change her real name! If you were born Smith been Smith all you life and will die Smith what possible reason going forward would any woman feel obliged to take a subservient name?

Says before “registering to vote”. If you’re already registered you don’t need to show anything to vote? If you move to another state would you be required to show something to register there? This will just make people not even try and I wonder which party this will affect more.

States purge the voter rolls all the time. You’d need to re-register, if you move or make any changes you would have to re-register. Then you would need a passport or ID & birth certificate with matching names to re-register to vote.

For the first time in my 30 year marriage, I had to order our legal marriage license to prove to my husband's employer we were legally married. My name was misspelled by the church on the official document. Guessing lots of women will find similar issues.

What BS. Help me? Because I got married?!?!?! Will men have to show a marriage license to vote? NO! Will single unmarried women have to show any proof of who they are? NO! This is DISCRIMINATION against married women, PLAIN AND SIMPLE.

Seems to me that the new legislation will be ripe for legal challenges. Maybe the women’s suffrage moment will rise once again to march for their right to vote and this time men will march proudly along with them.

It will be. The wording of it is specific. If there is any difference between the paperwork required for the name she legally has to be rejected at the door and not allowed to vote. You should be getting her all new documentation literally right now.

Any barrier that requires you to bring additional documents that would cost you money, time, effort to obtain is a violation of the 24th Amendment, unless every eligible voter is required to do the same.

Here's a good list of Alternative Documents States Could Use To Prove U.S. Citizenship, if Passport or Birth Certificate are not readily available. We still need to see if the SAVE Act and EO 14248 will be Amended or Edited to better reflect alternative documents. This list is at least a start.

So what's next? Your last name isn't identical between documents, that strikes you out. What if you got your license when you weighed 200 pounds & you show up after having lost 100? What if you had blonde hair when the photo was taken, & now it's brown? What then? Where does it end?

Republicans can’t afford to have too many people vote, because they’re unpopular! Trump only “won” in 2024 because of massive voter suppression. Two million votes tossed out bc gop activists challenged them!

Illinois takes 12 weeks now to process birth certificate requests. That’s just to process the form request. So I had to get an expedited service. $58 to get two raised seal copies. Appointments for new passports are booked a month out here in my state. Plan ahead and pony up a lot of cash.

How do you go about changing your name? I guess you have to go before a judge right? So court costs. Time out of work because courts are only open during the work week. And a fee I'd guess. Sounds like a pain in the ass to me which is undoubtedly the point and the goal. 😡

You have to have an birth certificate with the stamp or seal, not a copy and apply via social security. If you don’t have your birth certificate you need a court order.

What next? Divorced women who kept their ex's surname have to show documents that they were born then married and then divorced and the judge allowed them to keep their ex's surname? This is not going to go well for Republicans and 4 Democrats. What about the children in these cases?

The point is that men don’t have to do it. Maybe, Time to abolish marriage- just enter into contracts. Also, short term no more changing names for women upon marriage. Time for men to change their last names when they get married 🤣🤣🤣

How about reporting on "the issue", which clearly counts to Republicans disenfranchising segments of the populace by making voting just that much more difficult. You are still forcing yourselves to take bad faith Republican utterances at face value. Why are still you doing that?

Women have no need to accept their husbands last name anymore. Archaic. Get a drivers license in your Birth certificate name. When applying you might need a couple of past utility bills to prove residency requirements.

some couples also hyphenate or combine their last names, and this also throws their ability to vote in jeopardy. as it does with trans people and anyone that has changed their identity to evade a stalker.

Yes, it is an antiquated tradition that should be abandoned. This is about disenfranchising as many people as possible that oppose RepubliKKKans. It places an undue burden on voters. My DL has both maiden and married names BUT my DL is not accepted as proof. 😭

Another step of inequality in voting is what this is. Women that have changed their names are now having to go through extra steps beyond what is being asked of men. This law is straight up inequality on it's face. States may be able to help, but this shouldn't even be a thing.

I have no clue where that document is and what does it prove anyway? Nothing I have a birth certificate and a marriage certificate that I could have stolen. On the other hand I've had the same address since 2007. That's far more reliable.

Why is this voter suppression allowed to happen? Oh right. The system allows it. The anti-democratic electoral college, propaganda, dark money, the normalization of divisive partisan politics, unbridled corporate control, etc etc—this is why we have the MAGA GOP in power. Fuck.

💯percent bull shit! Fraud and abuse! Voter Fraud Election Fraud Theft of Service Abuse of Power Discrimination Causing unnecessary financial burdens on females! Make the spouse pay financial burdens attached with their absolutely egregious act

These days it's not just women who change their names when they get married. I have two married nieces/nephews and in both cases the husband and the wife both took a joint married name that wasn't their original last name. To my mind an even bigger barrier is the requirement to show up in person.

There will be no legal remedy available for people who transitioned if they were born in 1 of 6 states that do not allow birth certificate updates. People who've transitioned will have to jump through painful hoops in plenty of others. www.usbirthcertificates.com/articles/tra...

usbirthcertificates.comTransgender Birth Certificates by StateTransgender U.S. citizens can update their birth certificate to change their name and gender in most states. Get details on the requirements for your state.

In the US, you can legally change your name in the state in which you live. Other states are not necessarily going to recognize that name change. And, the article I posted was talking about gender change on birth certificate, not name change.

I’m admittedly ignorant about UK terms and how they apply. Being able to change your name isn’t the issue w/ this SAVE ACT. What we’re dealing with is the possibility of having to have all these extra documents to prove citizenship that not every bothers to get (because they’re expensive to many)…

The SAVE ACT is going to create huge problems! When there has been very little evidence of voter fraud, why is this even an issue⁉️ If it ain’t broken, #Congress shouldn’t try to fix it! 😡

and interesting point.. the only evidence of "voter fraud" was in red districts where the fraud was by people voting for the red candidate. create the problem themselves and then scream about it.

What 70 y.o. woman living outside city limits has the time, money, or energy to go figure that out? Most don't have computers. It doesn't invalidate their citizen's right to vote. Everyone should be auto-registered at 18th birthday.

If this is the requirement then counties have to remove costs to get those required certificates or this is illegal, but it is already illegal as it steps on state rights and the scotus has already insisted that those rights are a line in the sand…until the Fanta colored bunghole says otherwise ig.

We should only have to show our license. The license with a star on it proves we are citizens and that our name changed for our birth certificate. We had to show all of proper documents to get our license This slow is ridiculous

So you wrote a half ass law and now want the states to fix it for you? Great. Any state ID is acceptable, and any voter registration already done will be honored, grandfathered in. Problem solved. So stupid. Every democratic should vote no on this in congress.

It puts an undue and unnecessary burden on women. Plus the cost of procuring said documents is a poll tax. What if you’re an abandon child and your original birth certificate was filled out by the state literally as UNKNOWN UNKNOWN? No marriage certificate is going to fix that.

Tho minimum, there is a cost attached to obtaining required documents if women don't have them. It's an additional barrier men don't have. I don't know how much I will be charged to obtain a copy of my birth certificate & a divorce degree. But my ex- husband and husband don't have those barriers.

Why are females held to a different standard? Gov should have to prove its position that females are not citizens- instead of us defending our citizenship status. Trump believes I am not a US citizen, bring it on. I am innocent of being an illegal resident in the USA.

Will older women be forced to match their names on their birth certificates to the name on their SS cards in order to continue to collected SS? I know a few older women who have been divorced several times will sacrifice voting rights because it's too complicated to fulfill the voting restrictions.

This really doesn’t seem too difficult though people should register with their legal name - the Marriage record would have birth name/maiden name and married name. Feels like much ado about nothing - where are the other key points to ensure ALL can vote, are there not?

Marriage certificate isn’t an acceptable form of ID to prove citizenship. If you don’t have a passport you have to show an ID & birth certificate the names must match or you will be refused the right to vote.

Seems flawed, in the US you are saying marriage severs your connection to legal and direct line established citizenship? What is the evidence of citizenship that is invalidated by marriage and a surname change that can’t be directly linked to previous evidence of citizenship? Why?

Very valid point. I believe non-citizens can get SSI cards, but they look different. I did the same. I’m wondering now how difficult it will be to renew my passport when the time comes? I think some states will make it very difficult for women to get/renew passports. This may end up not

I had to produce my marriage certificate to change my name legally at the DMV. Did others not have to do this? Producing my marriage certificate with my driver’s license is just repeating what I already did. Isn’t it? My license should be enough. 😤 I mean, besides the point of all this BS of course.

The Federal bill does not recognize a way to reconcile a name change w a marriage certificate. The republicans voted down any amendments to codify that. That’s one of the concerns. It may be left to the states and therefor not consistently guaranteed for everyone.

Especially since any bad actor could mock up all this documentation if they really wanted to. Identity theft is a real problem because it isn't that hard to make fake documents that look real.

The name on their marriage license must match the birth certificate. When women marry, they don't change their birth certificates. Real IDs are insufficient as well as they do not prove citizenship. An amendment was offered to fix this and it was voted down.

Now we're supposed to rely on each individual state to fix this. Typical republican legislation. Making Americans suffer to fix a non-existent problem (non-citizens voting). It'll be easier to buy a gun than for women to vote.

When I was 13, I changed my last name and my original birth certificate was completely amended. I hope all those people don't have a hard time :( This whole thing is so STUPID!

Well I’ve been married more than once so I’m assuming I’d have to bring a red weld of paperwork to prove every name change in order to register to vote. But they’ll still let me buy as many guns as I want with little hassle, right?
