“So they say they Lincon, he’s on the penny you know, is he such a great guy one the one cent? Small guy, very small, not worth much. We can save billions and billion if we stop printing these woke DEI pennies. I mean you can’t buy groceries with pennies they’re just too many. Way too many.”

I don't have a problem with eliminating the penny. I do have a problem with Trump not working with Congress on this and giving zero notice to businesses like cash register companies, because their machines now have to be re-programmed. Even when he's doing a good-ish thing, he f*cks it up.

He is trying to make it seem like he is trying to save money without causing harm to Americans, when really, it's a distraction from inflation, tax increases, and the rest of the unethical and immoral actions he and his administration, including Elon Musk, have taken.

That means costs will be rounded up and life will be 'MORE EXPENSIVE' for our fellow Americans and that cost to economy is BY FAR MORE THAN THE COST OF PENNY PRODUCTION! That obviously is a MIScalculation and must be taken back immidiately!

I like pennies. I get they are becoming obsolete due to inflation; what once cost change now cost bills. But while treasury can reduce minting, Congress' coinage power is exclusive. Another Trump overreach. No matter how small it still matters. Make one thin penny; one thin dime...

I hate the man, but honestly this is not a crazy idea. Unfortunately I’m sure they have no plan on what to do when people will have to pay for things with no pennies.

Hi, not within the scope of Presidential authority, whatsoever. Plainly stated congressional power. You should try reporting a little deeper than face value, sometime. Once, ever.

So with no pennies how will we get appropriate change at stores? Is the government going to make up for losses or will everything now be rounded up - causing more inflation since you know it won’t be rounded down.

0.99 pricing came about A. So things would feel cheaper, and B. So people would have a penny to buy a newspaper. It wouldn't matter with online retailers, and brick and mortar could either go up to .00 or down to .95.

Obviously a good idea, but coining money is a Congressional power, per the Constitution. Dealing with this trivial annoyance in a non-Constitutional way will only support the idea that Washington DC “politics as usual,” is broken and *only Trump can fix it.* On balance, I’m not thrilled.

Like people have been saying since Everett Dirksen was in office. He alone stood countless attempts to can the penny because Lincoln’s image was on them and Ev represented Illinois.

Maybe if we talk about how much we love nickels and flat bills, Trump can finally get some braille on the paper money just to own the libs. Then after that, we can complain about subtitling at the cinema and wheelchair ramps, so he’ll order more of them just to piss us off. Accessibility for the win

You realize that you need to fix all the systems that accept physical cash to round up or down to the nearest wholly divisible by two value now? Oh well. I guess everyone has to may more.

This is not an unusual step, in fact most countries have removed their lowest denomination coinage from circulation. Australia got rid of its 1 and 2 cent coins years ago and other units are on the chopping block, indeed all cash is slated for disappearance as digital currency and payments rise.

How about we focus on the "It is unclear whether Mr. Trump has the power to do this." part instead? Because it seems pretty clear that he doesn't, which goes for a whole lot of things he has been doing lately.

That's so fking rich coming from a useless POS who costs WAY more than he'll ever deliver. Like for example the GROTESQUE amount of Taxpayer's Dollars that were spent so he could attend the Super Bowl for a Photo Op & a PR Stunt. As soon as I heard he picked the Chiefs, I knew they were doomed.

Waiting for this for many years; hope it'll increase the value of the bronze medallion of the original Lincoln penny my father got from his cousin Victor David Brenner who designed it. When the US penny becomes history, I’ll still have a piece of it. Now, let’s crash the value of Trump meme coins.

While it's true that a single penny is worth more to a metals dealer than it's face value, over its life time it is easily is worth MUCH to a functioning economy. If you remove the 1 cent coin, then ALL prices which can be paid for by cash automatically need to be now rounded to 5 cents.

Here in Australia it worked well, also. But the US is a different kettle of fish: resistant to change, hair-triggered over every little thing, and it is open to abuse by the unscrupulous (e.g. instead of rounding a grocery shop to the nearest 5c, they can *raise* every item to the next 5c (or more).

acknowledging anything good Trump does, however tiny it may be, just shifts focus away from the overwhelming amount of bad things he does. sadly, we must ignore anything good coming from Trump. we must remain focussed on his overall authoritarian goal and ignore the smooth highways he builds.

What I meant was, if you are buying something for $2.36 you pay $2.35. If it's $2.34 you pay $2.35 because we haven't had pennies in years. Rounded to the nearest nickel when paying cash.
