One thing I find intensely annoying is when pundits blithely assert things about the world that are obviously false. Bush was below 50% way before Katrina! He barely won reelection! Where on the chart do you think Katrina happened?

Noah Smith is the prime example for how bad cognitive biases can be in some people. He will is guaranteed to come to a conclusion he wants, not matter how stupid the analysis required to get there is.

Not to mention that Iran is not “Trump’s Katrina” because hundreds of Americans didn’t die and because Americans mostly don’t give a shit about foreign policy.

My issue with Bush was rushing into Afghanistan then to Iraq with no real plan. My military family member started high school right before 9/11, graduated then went to a military academy, graduated and the war was still going on! He did more tours over there than I can count. No more wars!

To the extent there was a *started to lose the country* moment in the second term, it was the big social security privatization fight right or if the gate, which he lost.

Eh. Katrina had a direct impact on perceptions of Iraq. It was a clear demonstration of Admin incompetence and led to Dems shifting on Iraq war that fall. Bush went from mid 40s to low 30s when surge was announced. Katrina triggered a collapse.

i distinctly remember this and my memory is that the katrina stuff was the turning point in the presidency like that's my *memory* even if the approval rating was on a continual decline anyway

It was one thing after another in Bush's second term: *Social Security privatization *Amnesty for undocumented (right wing hated it) *Katrina *Abramoff scandal *Financial crisis All unfolding against the backdrop of the Iraq quagmire
