all “grading” is a scam and has absolutely ruined the second hand games market, especially anything “retro”

There's nothing wrong with preserving a few of these in perfect condition for collectors. Once it's damaged, you can't undamage these. The game itself isn't even rare. Buy one of those copies if you want to own and play it.

It wasn't enough that it was impossible to hire an overpriced handyman now you have to add a 75 dollar fee for the various websites that he paid $75 a customer to sign up for It's the same thing

A lot of you seem to have just discovered the idea of a collector market or hobby today. 😂 People have been doing this with everything you can get your hands on for 100 fucking years and you guys are all scratching your heads lol.

Fml. This is just market speculation shit, isn't it? That's all this crap is. It was bad enough as is with the resale market and their absurd pricing...but this is beyond even that - at least the resale market you're generally buying the game to *play* it on actual hardware.

Its so werid to me that dudes obsess over the purity of graded or original prints. but its still the translation copy and we have to make up reasons why that element doesnt matter. Im not even that hard of a weeb but surely if the point is its an original wouldnt you get the one that released first?

Its the strange arbitrary mark up of supposed value. Meanwhile, the thing being posted doesnt even follow its own actual rules. So if we are making up values of things, the rom buried on my emulator is just as good as this $12k display piece. At least mine still gets played every so often.

Yes, it very literally was started by a singular company to prop up the market for their own holdings. It's since grown out of control and a means to create fake scarcity that doesn't exist.

I personally feel like the greatest tragedy of the retro collection aspect is... that the games sit there unplayed. Games are meant to be shared, enjoyed, and loved, for lack of a better term. It's hard to do that when they're left entombed in plastic on a shelf to gather dust.

It’s a copy of Final Fantasy 7, not a 1960 Ferrari. Putting a car like that in a garage for 40 years is a shame, not playing a plastic disc that there’s 10 million copies of floating around? Who gives a shit?

When I was collecting games about 20-25 years ago, grading was informative, it let you know the condition of something before you bought it and prices didn't vary wildy. Since then, rich people have realised how much can be made by over-charging for the best condition items.

I love FF7, it’s one of my all time favourite games, but if you’re paying more than ~£10 for the original in 2026 you’re getting fucking mugged

I'd pay an extra 5 quid to avoid the Platinum edition but that's as high as O'd got for such a high selling popular game.

If you’re the kind of person who does this shit then just know I hate you and I hope you lose all of your “investments” in a fire

you can find 'graded' games in grading cases pre-packed on AliExpress. complete bootlegs. there's a good chance most graded game sellers are just reselling those.

I get this for stuff like coins and currency and trading cards with which you can't "do" anything and they're easily damaged. Physical media? Barf. This is like albums...quite satisfying to see the color drain from a "collector's" face when they find out you're going to rip it open and spin it.

I looked into doing this a while back for some cards. I was turned off by the fact that they seal you collectibles into those cases, you have break them and hope you don’t destroy the thing inside. Those cases aren’t UV protected they do nothing to actually protect the valuable thing sealed inside.
