Leaders around the world are banking on tech advances to solve climate change. One leading idea involves capturing carbon pollution from the air and then burying it underground forever. It sounds practical. Here’s why there's no conceivable way it can work: (THREAD)

A better use of it, especially after the very expensive and inefficient capturing of the CO2, would be to mix it with concrete. It will remain sequestered and make stronger concrete; a material we will likely use for a very long time to come. Or, convert it to hydrocarbons to stop oil exploration.

Carbon capture was debunked years ago but the oil companies love to pretend it's viable... its up there with allowing plastics manufacturers to pretend they can recycle their poison, its a lie to keep the machine operating. That's all

The missing context here is why companies are interested in storing carbon in this way. The real interest is not reducing carbon in the atmosphere but instead to increase production from oil wells. Currently, we are paying companies to do this, at a rate of $85/tonne

Sounds like the current situation with oil underground, which is made from trees that pulled carbon out of the air. So the easier/cheaper solution is simply LEAVE IT THERE!

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...continue mining and burning fossil fuels. The entire concept of carbon capture is a scam. It would create an entire industry to purportively correct the problem of excessive atmospheric carbon dioxide. The only reasonable path forward is to increase renewable energy.

How about reducing emissions...? It is appalling how our current capitalist jungle prefers to invest in anything that allows it to continue to pollute even more. We are doomed if we don't destroy the system that is going to destroy us...! 😒

Maybe because capturing the 38 billion tons of CO2 we emit every year alone would need more than 3 times the energy the whole of humanity consums every year? Just a wild guess...

We obviously need some new leaders. I have yet to hear anyone say why they need all this AI. "Because we want it" is a child's response. Letting the crowd that cannot get a date without an assist, redesign society is not sane.

"It sounds practical"? Are you high? Or did you get your science credentials from Facebook? Nothing about that process sounds practical or even like it has a chance for being moderately successful. You would cause so much more damage in the process than you would even gain.

The most practical idea is switching to a concrete formula that absorbs CO2 instead of releasing it. Unfortunately the tech just isn't really ready for full-scale use right now.

While this type of engineered solution is obviously a pipe dream, there are some methods we could use to sequester carbon that are environmentally beneficial and low-tech. They won't come anywhere sequestering the amount of carbon that would be needed to stave off the worst impacts of climate change

but they could perhaps help a little at the margins and doing something is probably better than doing nothing, if it's not too complicated and offers additional benefits. Biochar is one strategy that could easily be used on agricultural lands and improves soil and crops, wetlands and prarie are both

really great carbon sinks and just by reviving them on marginal lands would help - plus with wetlands, you combat the more severe droughts that come with climate change. Then there are the experiments with algae which is really good at carbon capture; if you use the algae for making bio plastics or

bio fuel you haven't permanently captured the carbon, but at least you're not adding to it by burning fuels that have locked up carbon from millions of years ago. All very small ball, as I said, but some of these things would be fairly easy to do and don't require fancy tech to implement.

of course, but that's not really the point here, is it? It's an argument that serves the purpose of distracting us into believing we can manage it with tech, which fosters complacency and perpetuates the status quo.

Or we could rebuild the natural ecosystems, reestablish the long grass prairies and eat trail grown animals instead of dependence on CAFOs. For instance.

the largest 250 oil & gas companies own 1.42% of global renewable energy, & just 0.01% of the energy they extract comes from renewable sources Carbon capture is just an excuse to pump CO2 gas into old wells, repressurizing them to extend their oil producing life theconversation.com/we-reviewed-...

The answer seems pretty simple to me as a financial planner. We have to make polluting very expensive, so that business plans that center on heavy pollution won't even work out on paper, much less get real funding to become actionable. #CarbonTax

while destroying policies that have worked while denigrating, even destroying, those who are doing the work while forgetting that tech is dependent on smart, skilled, scientists, and has no actual intelligence

I think we have to find a way to move millions of folks at a time. This is not going to be fixed by our actions. #sorry

That is the principle behind regenerative farming. As an added bonus, it heals the ground, deposits large amounts of carbon and produces nutritionally dense food. We don’t need more tech, we need more nature.

Leaders with no grasp of science or facts think tech bro bullshit will magically solve the problems but they do not realize that shit is a major factor in making climate change much worse. Plus carbon capture is a JOKE. Pump billions of tons of CO2 into the Earth?? What could go wrong? Foul water.

Don't celebrate that this proposed solution may not work, ya'll. Instead, celebrate that there are those folks who are TRYING. Those who try will eventually succeed. Those who poo-poo every idea a priori will never succeed.

Fossil fuel companies will dream up projects, governments will implement them. So, looks like they're 'trying'. It makes regulation go away. Plastic recycling, for example. It's a scam (that we have to pay for). They must be stopped from scamming us into an unlivable world.

I offer as example Biden's crime bill in the 70s. He really thought he was doing a good thing, but it turned out to have bad effects. Folks DO try but sometimes F-up. It's not always an evil plan, sometimes we just get it wrong when we're trying to get it right. Do I like that? No, but it's human.

2/ It’s called Carbon Capture & Storage. To make it work, we’d need to capture CO2 pollution in multiple ways: • Trap it from smoke stacks • Absorb it from the air with grasses/trees, then capture it from those plants when they’re burned for fuel • Scrub it from the air with giant fans

4/ A U.N. analysis suggests that countries must inject 6 billion tons of CO2 underground each YEAR by the middle of this century in order to hit modest targets that avoid the worst consequences. But just getting all that CO2 out of the atmosphere is a daunting task...

5/ Imagine the neighborhoods and parks near oil, gas or coal-fired industrial plants. We would need to add equipment to capture the CO2 from each facility, in some cases doubling its land footprint.

Industrial CCS requires numerous new technologies, deployed on a vast scale, along with new "markets" to support that new industry. But we know mature and old growth forests have always worked to capture and store carbon. It's not a silver bullet - there is none. But should not be dismissed.

Please be careful in dismissing the role of (mature and old growth) forests in capturing and storing carbon. It's worked now for 100s of millions of years. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

This is a horrible idea for a million reasons. Maybe we just stop relying on fuels that pump millions of tons of carbon into the air. They know that the deep rocks don't stay deep, right? I can't imagine anything going wrong there.

Using more solar and wind is great, but if we don't also use less fossil fuel, it will have no impact on climate change. Sequestering carbon in wood is also good, as long as you can keep it that way for long enough to make a difference, which isn't happening.

DATA CENTERS ARE SPEEDING UP CLIMATE CHANGE- NOW YOU KNOW WHY TRUMP DEMANDED NASA TO DESTROY THE CLIMATE MONITORING SATELLITES- TO HID THE DAMAGE DATA CENTERS ARE CAUSING

The laws of thermodynamics say that is just plain stupid to do. Just discontinue fossil fuels and encourage natural systems to capture carbon the way they evolved which also has the lowest energy need.

Big Oil keeps trying to convince us that future technology will solve our carbon pollution problems -so no need to worry about burning gas. Shell and Exxon ran ads for yrs touting their algae as biofuel research. It was all green-washing -an effort to look as though they cared about the future.

theguardian.comBig oil firms touted algae as climate solution. Now all have pulled fundingInsiders aren’t surprised as ExxonMobil, the last remaining proponent of green algae biofuel, ends research

Cancer is a random mutation that can be triggered by the things you mentioned but also by viruses and other things. Sometimes by nothing at all, aside from a transcription error during cell division, which takes place many trillions of times in our bodies during our lives. It only takes one error.

It's inconceivable on its face due to the laws of thermodynamics. The energy needed to capture the emitted carbon will always be more than or equal to the energy you get from burning the fuel. Carbon capture could be useful when we have more energy from renewables than we need, but not before.

Even IF it worked, it would just give industry an excuse to abuse pollution standards. But there is no way to undo the damage already caused... It is wayyyyy beyond fixing.

I'll even go further. We've had the technology for abundance and a cashless society since the 70's. We could actually change the face of the planet in 10 years and live like citizens on Star Trek.

Typical human 'logic': Create trash that spews into the air because we demand our profit and convenience, then bury it underground so we don't have to look at (or breathe it) and thus can pretend we're not responsible. Because burying things in the Earth will never come back up to haunt us, right?

Driving in the 70’s I got angry, stuck behind the rare SUV in a country road. Hard to see around them to see if it was clear to pass. Now, half are trucks or SUVs. But when China skipped the motorcycle phase for the Mercedes phase, our future was sealed in carbon.

Simple solutions: 1. Kill the fossil fuel industry. 2. Plant trees. As long as terminal capitalism and Epstein class are running the world, all the nonsense "high tech" solutuons will keep popping up to fool the general public.

1/2 It’s going to take multiple approaches to keep the Earth from turning into a complete hellscape for most 1st: Severely reduce carbon emissions. 2nd: Capture and sequester as much carbon as possible. 3rd: (Unpopular opinion) Some form of solar radiation modification.

2/2 We are already crossing tipping points that will make life impossible or completely miserable in many places on the planet. The oceans have been storing most of the excess heat for decades. When they decide to start coughing it back up again, look out.

These "leaders" are looking for new tech, because they produce money making projects. There are tons of solutions out there, but they do not produce new companies that can bank money off of the process. So, they only push the money making ideas. Too often, leaders = criminals.

There are tons and tons of ideas out there that will work. But no one ever wants to expend the time and money. And the time and money is never really all that much. There are smokestack filters that cost a company maybe .01 % of profit, but would eliminate 90% of pollution. To them - a no go.

lmao their aDvAnCeD technology is literally poisoning the earth as we speak through data centers, failed spacex expérimentents, and bombs being dropped on Gaza and Iran… our planet already has the necessary systems and resources to cool itself, our evolution IS the most advanced technology.
