Under authoritarianism (see: American white supremacy), the criminal act of any individual in the out-group is an act committed by all. When one of theirs commits crimes, it’s a one-off - barely worth mentioning - those who would criticize are mere opportunistic partisans scoring political points.

I don't wish anyone ill, but I have more empathy for the hundreds of people who have died in spree shootings while not in the middle of an argument minimizing the danger of spree shootings.

Right? Just about all of the last few high-profile assassination attempts in the US were by right wingers, even the ones targeting GOP politicians - just going on the numbers you'd think the perp's more likely to be one of their own

This asymmetry has been a glaring and infuriating problem for a long time now. Republicans will keep playing this game as long as it continues to work for them.

All my Trumpist Co-workers were working themselves into a tizzy over the "Continued Violence from the Left" Anger that was missing when it was Democrat politicians being hunted a few months ago. Being the lone Democrat in a Trump loving factory in MN is not always fun
