I also suddenly realized a few years ago that • carrot is a vegetable • one British slang term for policeman is “peeler” • therefore Constable Carrot is a vegetable peeler I don’t think this is ever explicitly mentioned in the text. A true pun-master, trolling us from beyond the grave.

Also: the Welsh word for carrot is 'Moron'. Carrot is emphatically *not* a moron, but anyone not looking closely might think otherwise. And Terry's mother was Welsh.

The fact that Angua is just that little tiny bit unsure that Carrot isn't really a mastermind manipulating everything to his favor instead of a goof who manifests God fortune through sheer force of belief always made me chuckle.

I have come to adore Carrot and characters like him even tho in the wrong hands they tend to end up extremely boring and annoying. The dimensions that Pratchett gives him over the course of the Watch series have this wonderful subtlety to them.

To paraphrase Angua, he does have claws, he just almost never shows them but he knows when to do so. It also helps that he's a supporting character to Vimes, not the main character.

Carrot Ironfoundersson is the closest thing to Superman the Disc has, and not just in a physical sense

And I think the only person with a comparable effect is Cohen, which is why the end of the The Last Hero is so great. 🗡️

One of my oddest favorite things about Carrot is that one short story from when he was still a Corporal. For a fan (like me) who thought he had read *all* the books, getting one more story out of nowhere? That, as they say, is the way to do it.

I loved the sly joke at the end of Guards! Guards! -- after all the harmful garbage wrought by people yearning for a fated, rightful king to return and save them -- that Carrot is that king, but he'll do more good as an officer of the peace than he will on a throne, so that's where fate put him.

one of my very favorite moments in the series, when the Horde looks and Carrot and goes, wait, shit, one brave man with a non-magical sword on a Watch salary standing against six of us? for the fate of the world? by our own rules we are going to lose this fight, and badly

That scene and the whole argument about how anyone could pull a sword from a stone but it would take the true king to push it in (with obvious foreshadowing) might be my two favorite set ups for how others see carrot.

I think it's very interesting the way he morphed through the series from just The Biggest Himbo Nice Guy into The Biggest Nice Guy Who's Also A Bit of a Wily Bastard Underneath.

Morphed as wasn't he just as wily at the beginning? I think he was but just hadn't need to actually be so far... I don't he morphed so much as adapted to his environment using the wile he had all along but had no use for before leaving is beloved cave 😅 JMHO and not challenging *your* view 🤗

I think in Guards, Guards he's written as good-willing but daft (arresting the dragon and that). Someone else mentioned the bit in MAA where he gets let inside the Fools' Guild by saying the truth but knowing how his words are going to be heard - I don't think that's *quite* the same character.
