1000% it and it's ilk are at the root of so many bad events. It's clearly being weaponised by nation states to sow discontent ans disruption. We see too many fringe groups winning because of the volume, rather than accuracy, of message. Ban or severely police it.

It’s embarrassment that the Dutch governance (and maybe other EU governments, of which I don’t know) are still using X. Why? There is no explanation good enough. Stop with it!

This... and all his products should be banned as a self protective measure by all countries. It's the best way to prevent horrors we can't imagine. We only think a military conflict with our allies is impossible. Stand together or DJT and EM will divide and conquer. Wake the fuck up.

Agreed. The only time I ever heard from PP was when I was still on X. Even though I didn’t follow him, he was constantly top of my feed. Incessant, relentless whining and shit talking everyone else - I can’t imagine how awful it must be now.

Banning isn't the answer. There'll be something else. We need to accelerate efforts to educate the broader population on ways that they can defend themselves against the rampant misinformation/disinformation/lies else we'll be vulnerable to the next thing that seeks to exploit ignorance

With all the Canadian resistance, pulling US products out of stores, etc. Is there not sufficient momentum to move to independent social media? And it is not just X, also Meta..

Tend to agree. But is there any prove? The algorithms are not accessible.. Otherwise this will smell like censorship and will be used against you. Much better is simply abandoning X and let it die…

The problem with that framing is that Elon's Twitter is already censorship. Words & ideas he doesnt like are disappeared from the algorithm, only far right politicians & media are boosted & promoted across the site, the numbers are all made-up

I agree that Musk and X are a danger to democracy. They have far too much influence for comfort. I'm not sure that banning X would be any less of a danger. Having the ability to ban X means the government also has the ability to ban any other media they disagree with. That is a huge danger!

We stand at our own Edmund Pettus Bridge, while democracy bleeds and its so-called guardians wave protest signs like paddles at a silent auction for our rights. Resolve now—cross, resist, fight—because history won’t remember who held the signs, only who had the courage to march through the fire!

So Canadians don’t want to be force-fed every musk tweet or be overrun by racists, Russian bots, and conspiracy trolls? Hmmm, maybe you shouldn’t be the 51st state… This would be the greatest ban in history!!! Vous allez!!!

Absolutely. The platform was bought to use as a propaganda weapon and that is what it is. That they haven't deleted some core uses, is likely only because it would be less effective at its true mission if they did. Ban it. Replace it. Same with Facebook probably.

Canadians and Canadian organizations that support Canada should get the hell off X. If you are still there you are supporting Elon and his plans no doubt to mess with our upcoming election.

The EU and Canada need to ban X and Tesla start putting the hurt on him. We helped in WW1 and 2 . We the people of the US are asking for help now.

Unregulated social media is the reason the Us is in this situation. Facebook, Twitter, Insta, et al. destroyed trusted local news and the ability to discern what is and isn’t a trustworthy journalistic source by flattening credibility when they put punditry on the same level as journalism. 1/3

They also inserted themselves inbetween real journalism and its income by sucking up all that sweet sweet ad revenue. This created even more consolidation that puts national stories ahead of local matters, easing the barriers to corruption. 2/3

When no one is watching, it’s much easier to corruptly influence local and national politics. Especially when those corrupting influences own some of the larger trusted sources of good information. (Looking at you Bezos and Murdoch) Regulate Big Tech Now!

Heck, I can't even get my musical colleagues to stop posting there. With politicians, it's more complicated, but it still looks weird to me to see posts from Democrats and Labour politicians using it quoted on Bluesky.

I have mixed feelings because on the one hand, hurting these companies financially would be great... but on the other hand it will create even more of an echo chamber for the American users that stay on those platforms, which could be useful to them.

Yea I agree. I've deleted my accounts on all but bluesky and reddit (just discovered Lemmy as a replacement for that too). I agree that everyone should get off fb/x/ig, but plenty will stay. Right now they get to interact with the rest of the world - is it good if they are in even more of a bubble?

X claims to be pro free speech/freedom of expression. How free is the speech when algorithms promote propaganda and suppress other viewpoints or facts? It needs to go. We should also look closely at who owns other mass media and what their motives are too.
