I’m very curious how they will set this rate over time. They may need to pay off some countries with part of it, and then that can become a mechanism to allow them to increase it further. They could also charge US ships more.

No, I mean that's literally written into the law they passed setting up the toll. American and Israeli ships are forbidden from passage through the strait by name and by law.

Honest question I haven't seen reporting on. If theyre tolling then they're letting traffic through. If they were shouldn't crisis be easing? If they're not than tolling is on tiny transit for tiny revenues, right?

this is especially funny when you think about all of the whining from conservatives about Obama “giving” Iran cash lol

And they might choose to enforce it differently in non dollar transactions, in an attempt to weaken the dollar and undermine its status as the world’s reserve currency.

Yeah, I know they're doing it already, it depends how far they push it, and whether they make it ideological and insist on Chinese or other allied currency, or if they start accepting yen and euros for example.

This math is probably overstated. We don't know that they are tolling every ship, every ship isn't a VLCC and at the end of the day ~20m b/d pass through the strait. That's more like $20m/day in revenue if they fully toll oil and allow a full reopening plus whatever they toll on other commodities.

I wasn't basing the math on oil tankers, I was basing it simply on the number of ships passing through the Strait on a daily basis before the war (138). Even if Iran tolled only half the ships going through it would be equivalent to their entire annual budget.

I agree that this could be what's happening, just we're getting mixed reporting if its $2m per vessel (with an implicit assumption that the typical VLCC has ~2m barrel capacity) or $1 per barrel. If its $1 per barrel then we know the typical volume is 20m b/d through the strait.
