Well, at least [cough] it will [clears throat] - excuse me - spur Americans to embrace [snort chuckle] EVs, solar [phbbt!] and vegetable - [phbbbt] hee hee hee - protein hahaha OMG we’ll drink it straight from the gas pump and bathe in it we’d give up sex first … Hang on - let me try that again …

Playing "Bridge Troll" as a protection racket is at least partly why the KKKristofascists and their Mango Messiah have been yammering about the Panama Canal and got involved in this Iran holy war bullshit. Iran turning that back around is hilarious.

The medieval period of European history is full of similar examples when some strong man realized he could block trade and extract a tax. I think it took centuries before stronger forces emerged that could sell the benefits of trade. But we're still fighting over free trade in 2026.

Couldn't the depraved trump regime counter this by attacking whatever ships Iran does allow through? Forcing an 'everybody passes through or nobody does' policy.

I’m very curious how they will set this rate over time. They may need to pay off some countries with part of it, and then that can become a mechanism to allow them to increase it further. They could also charge US ships more.

Honest question I haven't seen reporting on. If theyre tolling then they're letting traffic through. If they were shouldn't crisis be easing? If they're not than tolling is on tiny transit for tiny revenues, right?

this is especially funny when you think about all of the whining from conservatives about Obama “giving” Iran cash lol

And they might choose to enforce it differently in non dollar transactions, in an attempt to weaken the dollar and undermine its status as the world’s reserve currency.

Yeah, I know they're doing it already, it depends how far they push it, and whether they make it ideological and insist on Chinese or other allied currency, or if they start accepting yen and euros for example.

This math is probably overstated. We don't know that they are tolling every ship, every ship isn't a VLCC and at the end of the day ~20m b/d pass through the strait. That's more like $20m/day in revenue if they fully toll oil and allow a full reopening plus whatever they toll on other commodities.

I wasn't basing the math on oil tankers, I was basing it simply on the number of ships passing through the Strait on a daily basis before the war (138). Even if Iran tolled only half the ships going through it would be equivalent to their entire annual budget.

I agree that this could be what's happening, just we're getting mixed reporting if its $2m per vessel (with an implicit assumption that the typical VLCC has ~2m barrel capacity) or $1 per barrel. If its $1 per barrel then we know the typical volume is 20m b/d through the strait.

The standoff was: if Iran tolls the strait, the US will bomb them. But the US did the punishment. And is still doing it. So there's literally no downside for Iran to toll the strait now. It's pure upside now. Brilliant strategery from the USA.

I for one hope Iran keeps the toll booth as long as possible. Iran's tollbooth on the Straits of Trump is going to be the biggest advertisement for renewable energy and electric vehicles possible. This is the global carbon tax we needed. Iran will bleed fossil fuel users dry.

It won't last for very long because renewables technology is already so far advanced. The world will have reduced consumption by a Straits of Hormuz by 2030. By 2035, use of fossil fuels will be less than half of what it is today.

Fantastic article. Thank you for sharing here. Since the use of military force to open the Strait would at best result in a pyrrhic victory, guessing Iran will remain in charge of their toll waterway for the time being. How the shooting resolves is a whole different matter.

…I think, at least for the international audience (and to further annoy Trump), coming up with an appropriate nickname that includes Netanyahu somehow would be most appropriate…..I like that ‘BB gun’ is so diminutive — maybe ‘BB Trump toll gate’ or something similar….

It occurs to me now, in a "should have been obvious" way, that Trump thought killing Khomeini was a big Win Button because the reverse would be true in his mind for the US. Narcissism is a hell of a drug.

Thanks to Trump for permanently raising the price for fossil fuel. China's expertise in producing electric vehicles will kill the USA's attempt for same.

Trump is a Russian and Israeli asset. The problem is what happens when the USA finally collapses and its military smoulders into into a useless wreck? Who will Israel go crying to then? What will Russia have over a dead orange idiot for leverage? 😳

Trump will offer Putin complete ownership of USA policy plus Texas for one trillion dollars cash and all ownership rights to Kaliningrad Oblast.

Vaya yo me pregunto que hubiera sido de los MAGA, si a Trump le hubieran dado el tiro en el culo en vez de la oreja, no quiero ni imaginar el espectáculo. 😳😳😨😨😨😱😱😱😱 🤣😅😂😆😀😄🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
