The internet can be pretty gullible about tech products, but congrats to everyone who called exactly what this was going to be used for from the first moment they saw it.

Content Warning, but too much of the country doesn't truly accept these truths, and they need to be where they can be found for those who choose to confront denial.

It's really damning. The accusations are numerous and well-supported. But I was really struck by the descriptions of Trump's behavior -- the name dropping, strong-arming, and attempts to buy off silence. His gross rivalry with Epstein. It's all so familiar. It's shit he's been doing his entire life.

One way that I remain deeply pessimistic: We didn't get here purely because of xenophobia. In part we got here because everyone thinks that achieving border security is possible, and it isn't. When it fails, it looks like a failure, and the electorate says, "Wow, maybe we need something harsher."

There's more to say about this, but note that the starting point is that the courts decide that they are allowed to do the thing that they previously decided they aren't allowed to do.

This is a half truth. We could cover the entire planet with solar panels, but if we’re still using oil and gas, we’re not going to halt global heating. If you support clean energy AND the expansion of fossil fuels, you’re making climate worse, and you should be honest about your blind spots.

I'm not reposting this as an endorsement of the statement here, but for the high-emissions, high-temperature rise scenario discussion downthread.

New @centeronbudget.bsky.social fiscal policy paper. The U.S. has 2 deficits: 1. A fiscal deficit 2. An investment deficit—our failure to adopt policies making folks better off. Fiscal policy should reduce both—not reduce one deficit by growing other. More revenue can do just that.

Center on Budget and Policy Priorities@centeronbudget.bsky.social

As our nation faces both a federal budget deficit and a federal investment deficit, policymakers should focus on raising revenue to address both challenges, expand opportunity, and build a more shared prosperity: www.cbpp.org/research/fed...

As a casual energy policy nerd - paying just enough attention to be dangerous - I have seen good arguments both for and against the permitting bill. I understand the NO argument, but I lead towards voting yes on a specific logic - that we will kill the filibuster & overhaul SCOTUS in 2029. 1/X

Decarbonization in this country needs a D trifecta for as long as possible - and then it needs avoidance of an R trifecta ever again for decades - in order to change the incentives and structure that makes decarb w/o that D trifecta currently impossible.

We absolutely and desperately need a bill ASAP post-2029 that undoes the stacked deck against RE in this country - tariffs, lack of tax credits, regulatory obstacles - and stacks it in favor of RE. This bill is not that and no such bill is possible w/o a D trifecta and dead filibuster.

I think the NOs may well be right that this bill may not bring emissions down. Maybe, maybe not. Either way, we will need an ironclad commitment to getting a new bill passed in 2029/30 that strips back out the obstacles to environmental review of FF.

In the meantime, passing the bill now gets a faster start on pushing transmission build in the US into overdrive, and gets bipartisan buy-in on that part, making it slower to be rolled back. It is possible that RE in RE-friendly states & areas will outcompete FF from there and the bill lowers CO2.

Musk would do this through those f*cking Trump Accounts they opened in every child's name without parental consent. I HATE these SO much. Parents cannot close the accounts. Parents cannot reject donations to the accounts. And we must hold on to donations for at least 5 years. I'm a state lawmaker.

I've been skeptical of malicious intent re the Meta NoKings interference. Tactically, blocking there halfway through its mundanely successful event made no sense - the account has done 90% of its job, the event was autopiloting. Big picture, the rats aren't jumping *onto* the sinking ship right now.

Mike Masnick@masnick.com

Not to pick on Sam here, but this is a useful point to highlight some of the impossibility of trust & safety work. Meta actually used to have a program *exactly* like this, BUT it became a central feature of Frances Haugen's Facebook Files as an example of Meta being evil. I'll explain...

Here are three ways you can help as a consumer: 1. Eat less meat, especially beef/lamb. 2. Waste less food, especially beef/lamb. 3. Eat even less beef/lamb. Don't feed them to your pets either.

The Gulf Monarchies — a small group of royals on top, a group of citizens underneath them who enjoy rights as long as they're loyal to the regime and then below them a huge group of quasi-slave guest workers with no rights at all — is considered a model for what conservatives want for the USA

Sew:YKnot?@sewyknot.bsky.social

The plot to sell us off as saudi slave labor

I just want to scream at everyone. I don't, that would be unhelpful. Also, I focus a lot of my time here attacking AI infra from a climate perspective, but very very of course, our full energy infrastructure is very very unsustainable. As in, if we don't ramp it back controlled, it will collapse.

The political of what citizens and politicians will accept and the practical of what we need to do to avoid - in a good case scenario - World War II levels of migration, violent political chaos, widespread famine, and the unpredictable partial collapse of our energy system are miles and miles apart.

What kills me about the AI infrastructure is that lowering energy demand in absolute terms is like asking for communism in the US - completely impossible. It is so much more feasible to stop it from growing, to say no to new toys, then to take toys away. We have been instead just binging on toys.
