Yet another example of how we fund the basic science that isn't profitable, and then some companies use the results to become extremely profitable. We put up the initial capital. We should all be treated as shareholders. We all deserve a dividend from everything built off of publicly-funded R&D.

At the very least, these Corpos should pay hefty taxes in return for all the profits derived from TAXPAYER supported research. Also as thank you for govt grants supporting their Corpos (Tesla? SpaceX?)

The public benefits are the treatments. In the current system, the government tends to do basic research, and then pharmaceutical companies tend to spend a fortune finding applications and paying for controlled trials to get medicines approved by the FDA.

Because many medicines are not approved, pharmaceutical companies have to recoup all their expenses and make a profit on the medicines that do reach the market, especially those with a large consumer market. The way they do this is through patents.

There are proposals to change this. One of them is to have the government contract with companies to produce medicines that are patent-free, and whose research results are immediately made public. In this system, the government would pay upfront for 100% of the research, including controlled trials.

the vast majority of medical breakthroughs in this country are based in some way on publicly funded science. pharma companies and researchers at private institutions rely on VA/NIH research at every level

Yeah, most people don’t realize that basic research is what’s funded by the government. NIH and NSF. None of that’s done by private industry. Because most of it’s done for academic interest and not for money. It’s private industry that uses the knowledge gained from academic interest to make money.

[chud senator voice] can you bee-leeve that these GOVerMENT S-EYE-en-tists are using YOUR taxpayer dollars to study lizard spit?

it's the part of this whole thing that infuriates me. it's not just that they don't know what they're doing, it's that they've had direct, obvious, public, colossal examples of science research leading to incredible breakthroughs and they think it's just TV dinners for brown kids in africa.

Oh yeah, it’s got everything; natural basis for medicine in a fragile ecosystem, R&D that only a government would conduct and fund, massive positive human health outcomes.
