It’s not and I assume Columbia will sue but as we’ve seen over the past few months, the DOJ will drag this out - rulings against this will be appealed or ignored until more lawsuits are filed. Meanwhile, staff and postdocs will be laid off and grad students will lose funding.

It’s alright — they probably weren’t that great to begin with if they gave up that easily. No point in propping up weak, pitiful institutions that are quick to throw students under the bus while bleeding them dry with outrageous tuition fees.

Columbia University is a world hub for researchers trying to solve incurable neurodegenerative diseases ALS, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s. Millions more will die as US population ages. This is madness.

Maybe this will serve as a cautionary tale to other universities tempted to turn away the fascists' wrath by early capitulation. It never works. They hate you and want to destroy you, and they will only do it faster if you bend the knee.

And that's *after* Columbia betrayed every principle of university autonomy, and bent over to trump and his dictatorial whims. Great job. They sold out their credibility, and still lost the money. Now there is no bottom.

They've got c. $15bn in their endowment fund, so their behaviour is even worse, they could easily have ridden this out with no need to be smaller, in any sense.

I talked to someone who is familiar with university endowments. He said that about 80 percent of his university's endowment is restricted. The situation is similar at other universities. They cannot just dip into the endowment money to replace government funding that has been stripped away.

They are not going to stop bullying. They might just attack one at a time as they expand their control. Resistance needs to be coordinated and it has to include most of the researchers, hospitals, and universities in this country. Sorry to be so blunt, but we can't be bullied into the dark ages.

Columbia has been a terrible actor here, as many commenters are saying. But that shouldn’t turn into glee. We shouldn’t celebrate fascist victories and we shouldn’t wish harm on others just because they didn’t do the right thing when they were threatened with harm!

If you give a bully an inch, they will take a mile. Sometimes I wonder if academia's refusal to stand up to Trump is due to the fact that so many of us were nerds and bullied in the past. PTSD? Learned helplessness? Either way, there is no 'it gets better' hope for us if we continue to cave.

Weird. As a grad of Columbia, I contend that I learned the critical thinking skills to be able to see this coming from miles away at the very place that did not seem to see it coming from miles away.

My stupid lifelong belief that universities had a higher calling has been proven completely incorrect. They capitulated and got screwed anyhow.
