A periodic reminder that you can live without "modern" tech and do fine. I have never owned a smart phone and am doing great. Still using a circa 2006 Intuos 3. Still driving a 2009 Nissan Versa with knobs n everything; still listening to CDs. If tech makes you unhappy, you don't have to use it~

I still use that model of tablet as well! Anytime people ask me for tablet reccomendations i tell them to get one of those bad boys from ebay, best tablet ive ever had!!

I want a "dumb devices" movement, where everything that can be made purely mechanical with no electronics returns to being built that way.

Honestly felt! I don't have my CDs anymore that are still functioning, but def considering burning some on my old laptop along with getting mp3's for music. I also own a Nissan Versa (2011), and while I don't have an old phone I miss having the kyocera...the one with the keyboard was amazing.

it is an honor to compete with you on ebay for intuos 3 replacements my friend (my current one has really had a long run tho, they really are borderline indestructible) not to tempt fate here but i've still never had art-related back, neck, or shoulder pain! (drawing with the tablet on my lap)

I have not had any pain either, not even after a stupid run last year toning 20pgs per week for 3 months. When I used to do shit like that on my old Shingtiq I’d end up in the urgent care. And, I tip my hat to you, fellow eBay warrior, lol. may our discontinued nibs never run dry.

Can you text people with a flip phone still? My brother was saying you couldn't connect with modern messaging formats. Though I'll probably go with his suggestion and just build a cyberdeck gauntlet for my next phone. I wanna look straight out of SMT 1/a William Gibson novel.

Since I had some msgs; phone is a modern Kyocera DuraXA Equip. It uses 4G and I use it primarily for work calls and texting my dentist. I have a tablet (iPad) for work/“mobile” stuff where there’s internet, and plan ahead for no-internet stuff like GPS. I use in-browser test environments for work.

The intuos is from eBay. I use social media on my desktop like an old person and do not use FB/ insta/ tiktok/ spotify/ whatever except for one or two work alts. Your mileage may vary depending on what you do for a living. People lived just fine like this until 2006, I was there 3000 yrs ago, etc

I’m so grateful to have an Intuos3, might go back to it at some point because lots of people find it’s better for their posture to draw that way!

Was never one for GPS, I do it old-school. I just memorise directions beforehand, with a physical map book as a fallback in case I take the wrong turnoff. Mine is a Nokia 235 4G btw.

I ask myself "does this make me happier than before" before using new tech, and the answer has rarely been yes. So I don't have too much newer stuff other than my desktop comp and an ipad I use for work. So far I've rarely been impacted outside of not having access to rideshare apps when traveling.

I'm also work for a company that respects my right to be offline during non-work hours, so ymmv. But I also think that if enough people unshackle themselves, that kind of 24/7 access would not be possible. If anyone is curious about practical aspects of de-smartifying and has q's, please feel free.

Actually, the one thing I fail at is both my brother and partner use their smart phones as impromptu tasers when we're in public spaces (that's when you wait until it's quiet and then bury the phone in someone's side and go ZZTTT to make them scream) and my dumbphone can't compete with that power :\

that's the tough one. I had to acquiesce on that because our last non-smart TV died and my partner wanted something made this decade. Apparently the only non-smart tvs still being made are for business applications where security is possibly an issue, and they're very expensive. That, or projectors.

I absolutely would still be using my Intuos 3 if I could but the cable had broken on mine years ago and it couldn't be fixed :( Related to this post, though, I've been wanting to get a little stereo again for CDs. (Last one also broke)

I'm glad there's still some sanity! What I really loved was my car before this one, it still had the window rolldown handle things. I am too distractible to use a screen when driving so those tactile features have been so nice and memorable compared to what's around today.

My only smart device is my phone. I replace it when the battery stops working well. Most of my friends live all over the world, so having various apps to keep up with them is what I mostly use it for. That, and nav/finding things nearby when traveling. Otherwise, my newest car is from 2011

A Honda Fit, so no smart tech in that (manual too!) my second newest is from 1999. In my house, I have a computer hooked up to the TV if I need to play anything, and my network attached mysic system is from the early to mid 00s (logitech squeezeboxes) and they run on a local server that I put music

On myself. Newest game console is a 360, though I mostly play PS2. Heck, when I got a toaster oven, I got one with a mechanical timer and bell. Only down side is, it acts the same pluged in or not, so I get cold food sometimes.

For real i ran my intuos 3 into the ground and only reason i moved on was irreparable issues with the hardware. our car is a 2008, my phone is also old so i vibe with this a lot haha

I have also still my intous 3 here from 2007!. Though I have a smartphone, but slight old one- just so I can take photos with it, but it‘s always offline outside cellular and no apps. I manage by irl mostly, though some stuff may be limited (some stuff requires smart phones app, it’s silly)

see if I got a partner who has a smartphone I could also travel the world without a smartphone (this is not a gotcha but an expression of mild envy). love my ancient dacia though that I stole from my parents

I do definitely need J for the Lyfts, lol. They apparently make an version of an old people phone that has no apps except rideshares and "help I fell down" monitoring, but I have too much dignity to use those lol. I'll just die on a random street instead ig

new cars kinda frighten me a bit. while driving my dad's new nissan he insisted I try this feature that would keep an even distance between you & the car ahead. this was on a highway going like 120 kmph. & I kept insisting, dad, we're closing in on the car ahead, this is dumb

I'm happy that you're able to get on without a smartphone. Unfortunately, for a lot of people, it's just not feasible. Usually because of jobs. I know I'd be stuffed without my smartphone for work & the environment I work in makes a laptop impractical.

I actually gave my original one away, then a few years ago when my Cintiq Companion started to die, I realized it was truly killing my body and stopped using Cintiqs. Got a few Intuos 3s on eBay for super cheap instead so I can keep replacing them if I need to, they still work just fine.

Buying them off of eBay is a great idea!! I use an old Intuos too (I also hate screen tablets because they are the only thing that ever gave me back/shoulder pain) and I’m always worried about what I’ll do when mine breaks. I’ll check eBay!🙌

It's fine. But if there's any friction to placing the game down and walking away, it's worth asking whether you own the game or if the game owns you. I don't play habit-forming games frequently for this reason. Likely not a popular take so you can ignore me ofc.

I usually install it, check on it once a week a couple times, forget I have it, then uninstall it to make room for FAN DUEL CASINO LEMME SPIN THAT WHEEL I CAN QUIT WHENEVER I WANT BAYBEEE!!! BIG MONEY BIG MONEY!!! YEEEEAH!!!
