Why are 3D printers are more reliable than 2D printers make it make sense

3D printers are priced properly, need good software and don't scam you. There literally exists ink cartridge packs (costs pennies to make) that cost more than some printers, the cartridges don't empty, have tamper protection so you can't refill it or use another brand's, and the software is garbage.

I've got a somewhat different experience - I think it feels that way because we still have low expectations for 3d printing. Every 3-4 prints I do on my 3d printer, something goes at least partially wrong, whether it's weird bed adhesion issues, stringing, or even just fragile parts breaking.

There's a lot that can physically go wrong with 3D printers, but I don't think I've ever hit "print" and had the printer never get the print job, or had an update make the PC forget the printer, or had it complain that I was out a different color filament than the one I was printing with.

But I still have a magic box that can turn plastic string into physical objects, so... I mostly don't care/deal with that when they happen? My 2d printer basically only has similar levels of problems when it runs out of ink, which my 3d printer simply stops and does nothing when that happens

Because they kept adding more and more features instead of just “Hey, print this.” 3D printers are still just “hey, print this” Once they have the tech stable enough to innovate new features, they’ll be equal in reliability. Because the 3D will go down to meet the 2D.

I'm not too sure that's it exactly; 3D printers have gotten tons of other features like auto-leveling, AI print monitoring, etc. I think it's more that bc 2D printers are ubiquitous, people need to buy them, so the companies can get away with not caring bc what are they gonna do? Not buy a printer?

Because people wouldn't buy em if they didn't improve them. They used to suck way more and got better 2d Printers are too indispensable so there's no real pressure to improve them

Inkjets are terrible if you don’t use them very often, and they’re also the cheapest 2d printer, so they’re what people who don’t need a printer very often get

2D printers are an effective monopoly, and the companies that make them exploit their monopoly power to push an inferior product into the market designed to benefit themselves more than the consumer. 3D printing is a highly competitive market and they are trying to sell to customers.

I used to work in IT. Consistently the worst thing was always printers. They never worked right, and every issue was unique. Even if it was the same issue, the solution as unique, every single time. And the tech never once improved. It never got better over time. Printers are hell.

The fact that inkjet printers work at all is a modern miracle of science, they’re *incredibly* complex and technical machines considering how much they cost …that and monies prob Also fun fact printer ink costs more to buy per ounce than liquid gold, but they produce it for pennies 👉🏻
