Dawg we are talking about 1966, no American white working man was suddenly getting left high and dry by deindustrialization or austerity or recession The only “radical shift in the material conditions” was “you have to let black people into your school/office/shop/apartment block now”

The “something” in question was the workers themselves deciding by 1966 that they no longer wanted New Dealer welfare capitalism if it meant black Americans would benefit from it while anti-war protesters were free to burn the flag

Something happened in the 70's that crystallized politics (and many other topics) into a new set of assumptions and priors. It gave rise to Reaganism and completely crushed New Deal Socialism; Dems that eventually reemerged were and still are centrists scared of their own shadows.

The Hard Hat Riot is the single most important and consequential independently organized labor action in post-Gilded Age American history but the entire left-of-center has deliberately chosen to completely forget it because of how utterly embarrassing it is to us

It's so weird how most US cities are run by like,, a version of the Urban Growth Machine that's somehow also nimby now? Like they'll support extremely dubious public private partnerships for sports stadiums, and want to legalize gambling for the tax revenue, but housing is too far

Anyway, occasional reminder that attempting to get NYC tenant activists to explain how they would actually pay for the NYCHA’s maintenance backlog produced the classic “white ways of knowing and being” tweet.

The Cheesecake Factory stuff is dumb, let’s go back to r/opensource banning discussion of Linux

I have my first irl warhammer tournament tomorrow. I made a checklist for each game so I don’t forget to do anything.

President Harris would probably not be at war with Iran. She certainly wouldn't have regime-changed Venezuela. Under President Harris, the USA wouldn't send anyone to CECOT. Under President Harris, Alex Pretti and Renee Good would not have been shot by DHS thugs.

The funny thing about people trying to “subvert” a genre they don’t like very much, is that with murder mysteries they often end up unintentionally copying something Agatha Christie already did better.

Democrats should really feature these creeps their extensive ties to this administration.

I think that democratic politicians should not forget that the teamsters are going all out to defend swing seat Republican ghouls like Mike Lawler

There are a lot of good arguments about what the Dems should do if they get power, but job one needs to be a drastic reduction in the powers of the Presidency (and probably SECDEF too). If you don’t do that, the game is up. The next person to abuse that power will be better at it.

There was a friend on the sidewalk. I was worried she was hurt but she flew away after a bit so hopefully she’s fine.

Heck yeah, the new Tomb Kings arcane journal released and it’s everything I wished Royal host was. Chariots are good now + you can still make use of foot tomb guard

I’m sorry are we having a meltdown that the emergency computer code is written by a machine instead of a master human artisan and the code is therefore not properly ensouled as befits such artful craftwork

Not an ai apocalypse doomer or whatever, but entering a world where the normal operation of cybersecurity is vast swarms of hacker bots battling vast swarms of defender bots 24/7 at a scale beyond human comprehension doesn't seem like a *great* path forward.

Re-professionalizing and de-politicizing DoD will be crucial. And doable, as this thread with specifics shows. Add Thiel-Palantir to Musk-SpaceX and Luckey-Anduril review. Courts martial for boat bombings. Problem is, it’ll take political will, and there’s at least two more years of damage to go.

To-do list for SD Mayor Pete and DSD Uncle Frank (and the transition team): - at 1201 rip down the stupid fucking sign, regardless of whether Congress has officially changed the name (not looking good for the 27 NDAA lol) - at 1202 issue orders to rename all the confederate bases back*

It's a myth in much the same way that "Versailles created Hitler" is a myth. The idea being that there was something "the West" could have done differently that would have averted catastrophe. It's seductive for think tankers because it lets them spin off wild hypotheticals of what might have been.

The idea that the US deliberately humiliated Russia in the 1990s is a bizarre myth. We were overtly solicitous and supportive of them and their hurt feelings. We just didn’t accept their claim that the nations or Eastern Europe could never seek their own destiny.

The US and the West welcomed Russia into the community of nations after the Cold War. Investment poured in. The G7 turned into G8. The idea that Poland, Estonia, etc. forming their own foreign relations was so unfair to Moscow that Russia is entitled to murder Ukrainians 20 years later is insane.

Going to give my own takeaway on the demise of Bioware, which still makes me very sad. The TLDR: Bioware was not killed suddenly by a private equity acquisition. It was slowly strangled by idiots who didn't understand what made Bioware great - some at EA but also some inside of Bioware leadership

gonna bury this one in the replies a little bit but while i think dx uptick for adhd is very much driven by awareness i think it's also driven by nicotine cessation-- we had a widespread-to-the-point-of-inescapability drug that ~worked pretty well for ADHD (shame about the other side effects)
