It never stops being weird watching homophobes dance to YMCA, the most popular gay anthem of all time.

Hey, I’m getting hammered on a post where I was defending your existence but at the same time not judging anyone else’s religious belief system. The last thing I want is to feel like I’m back on X didn’t know if you had seen the conversation but it is the most negative experience I have had here🥹

YMCA, The song in itself references the Young Men's Christian Organization, an organization that is known to offer housing to men who need it – and thanks to the song, became associated with culture and the popular YMCA dance. Sorry it was created for gay people.

Pretty sure they're just showing their true colors. Didn't Bobcat Goldthwait have a bit about how most homophobes are latent homosexuals? Comedians say in jest what can't be brought up in polite conversation, is all I'm sayin'.

It's the closest they've come so far to coming out. #traitortrump alone was accused of sexual assault NOT JUST on women and girls, but ALSO ON YOUNG BOYS. I think it's likely that a lot of these traitors are closeted.

They see “manly” men and its a super basic dance. The inability to self examine is key to right wingers. Remember RATM suing the Trump campaign for using their songs without permission. It was literally a song about fighting people like them, but they liked the tune without paying attention.

Fine I'll throw my hat into the ring. In a few words the song is pretty overtly gay. "Stay there and I'm sure you will find Many ways to have a good time" This lyric refers to the fact that gay men were having sex in the YMCA. This is actually what was happening at the time.

In the 1970's there were a lot of gay men in YMCA boarding houses because they were disproportionately homeless. That fact led to gay men hooking up. The song makes lots of references to hooking up throughout the song. "They have everything for young men to enjoy You can hang out with all the boys"

The only reason it was adopted by the lgbtq+ community was because the men were fit and wearing different uniforms, but ultimately just because a community has adopted it as an anthem , does not make anyone that listens to it all of sudden be “gay”. Why do we complicate everything?

Just goes to show you there are never single truths haha. Real question is why would he deny it publicly if it was in fact for the community? Such a weird contradiction. In all the articles I found online it always explicitly states that he said it was not specific. Then again it is the internet🤣

Why? He's one of 2 writers. Perhaps he's unaware of the intent, or, more likely, he's being coy about it to distance himself from it as he's not really gay. (He's not really a cop, either) But Village People is unambiguously a "gay" group. The song's on an album called Cruisin', for Heaven's sake!

They are thinking it is about the religious rooming houses that were its start, evolving into community gyms and a place to teach your kids to swim in a time when public pools were forced to integrate.

The song Y.M.C.A. is based on the Young Men’s Christian Association and seems to applaud the association’s subsidized temporary housing for young men. I have to say you keep getting thinking these song are my what they were created for gays?

I’m 62 years old I know who wrote the song and he even said in a interview that he didn’t write it to be a gay anthem song he wrote the song because of all the fun stuff he got to experience there. Willis wrote it as a disco song,I know the village people was originally from greenwich Village.

Being more explicit, the Y.M.C.A. was known for decades for being a place for gay men hooking up in the showers, bathrooms, locker rooms, etc... The song by the Village People, a gay band, was using coded language to talk about gay sex. The same way they did with their song, "In the Navy."

Only to the gay but the song wasn’t written about that, the writer said so? So everyone loves the song, I have always danced to the song I’m not phobic either I have a son who’s gay I love him no matter what. It’s so silly for all of this divide it’s literally tearing families and friends apart?

I wonder whether in 10 years, they’ll look back on footage of themselves & cringe 😬 Or if their grandkids see it on-line & ask them wtf they were thinking? You know, like we’re looking at footage of Epstein & cringing when it was just another night out when it was filmed
