He's buying news not entertainment media as an investment. Larry and David Ellison are close personal friends with Trump. Trump gave them control of Tik Tok USA, and they've bought/buying up CBS News, 60 Minutes, CNN, and more not to mention the consolidation of multiple entertainment empires.

This is a cash acquisition, not a merger. A merger is an exchange of stock or stock and some cash. That said, the only successful major studio acquisition was Sony's purchase of Columbia Pictures. All the others have been disastrous.

Larry and David Ellison, close personal friends with Trump, want to buy CNN, not WBD. I wouldn't be surprised if they take CNN out and sell the rest to Netflix at a loss the next day. They already control Tik Tok USA (most under 30 get 100% of their news there), CBS News, 60 Minutes, and more.

It’s not about profit. It’s about playing the long game by controlling information. And the Dark Side will probably have enough of that ability before anybody can do anything about it.

Allowing Ellison to purchase yet another massive media company is the main problem here and should require antitrust hearings. If the Repubs don't do it, Dems will. He already owns or runs (Tik Tok USA), CBS (which includes news and 60 mins) and this would also give him CNN and that's a lot of news.

They don't have to sell. Like selling a house you built knowing the highest bidder will demolish it. Awful on so many levels.

I would certainly be a seller, regardless of whom the buyer turned out to be, just on the basis that the company will probably be worth less in the future thanks to the merger.

It will. He's buying up news organizations, not entertainment media though he doesn't mind if those things make him money too. He cares about CBS news (Paramount), 60 Mins which Trump hates, Tik Tok USA (Trump gave him control), CNN news (WB), and more. This is an information war we are losing.

many expect the WB film library to be sold to deal with the $50B debt, thousands will get pink slipped, he paid a lot of money to get control of fading CNN-perhaps to shut it down & to weaken HBO, lot of what made HBO unique will cease and guaranteed firing John Oliver is high on the to-do list

CNN is generally considered liberal. They recently tried to tip it to more conservative news but that didn't go over well with their existing viewer base (this was really stupid). Now that Ellison will own CNN, there won't be any anti-Trump stories or they will be watered down. Kind of like 1/

It's a big part of it. The plan leans more toward news and then writing in network television shows and movies to lean conservative but news is the number one goal and Trump added in every late-night talk-show host who has made fun of him. For some reason they are worse to him than Obama.

The entertainment industry's merger obsession is fascinating from a psychology angle — it's like watching the same cognitive biases play out in boardrooms decade after decade. You'd think executives would learn from AT&T/Time Warner, but apparently pattern recognition isn't taught in MBA programs.

I actually feel bad for Netflix here. It was practically a done deal, then the Ellisons (and probably Trump) intervened and completely fucked them. Hopefully it falls through.

The Ellisons were allowed to buy up the company that owns CBS so they now control all of their news divisions including 60 Minutes which Trump obviously wants control of. Trump also gave them control of Tik Tok USA (most under 30 get 100% of their news from TT) Now they are buying CNN too.

And just in case there was any question, Larry and David Ellison are close personal friends with Trump and have donated ungodly amounts of money to him. They have officially donated $30m to Trump but more from organizations they give money to that gave it to Trump - that's a secret of course.

Warner Bros. messed-up for their messing with Johnny Deeps business over supposably hurting the ex-wife which was proven false in court. And we lost the last few movie shows of Greenwalt. The ongoing of JK Rawling’s books, movies.

Well, good luck. If this merger goes through I'm saying farewell to Bugs Bunny after almost 70 years, but that's life. There is nothing else I really care about. CNN died a long time ago. I get my news from allies or podcasters. I don't really watch TV or go to the movies.

You know-- here is what would have been helpful -- if any of these mergers had gotten rid of a separate streaming service charge. But this is akin to paying Ma Bell and 4 baby bells all of whom are raising their prices and providing so much wasted overlapping content!

The LA Times are owned by a Trump supporter so whatever you read there is likely tilted a bit towards a conservative explanation. Larry and David Ellison are close personal friends with Trump and WBD gives them control of CNN. They already control CBS News, 60 Mins, and Tik Tok USA (under 30 news).

The owner of the LA Times even told the editorial board to back off from writing so many articles about Trump. Trump is trying to get his friends to buy up or control as many "trusted" news organizations as he can.

The article actually said that Paramount Plus isn’t doing great and it wants Warner Brothers who isn’t doing great due to debt from last merger. So it looks like Paramount Plus took on debt that could hurt it. Another article said they reward Netflix for fiscal discipline.

This isn't a short term goal for Trump and the Republicans. They've been talking about these things for years and these things are in Project 2025. He just bought Paramount/Skydance in a deal that only went through b/c Trump won the election and made numerous changes to CBS News, 60 mins, and 1/
