I got it to run pretty good aside from arguing over modem drivers... This was also the era the internet got noticed by millions of people. You could talk to folks in other countries ! This was HUGE. It still is.

How sweet Windows 95 was. User friendly, a little wonky but better than anything else. There are times when using Windows 11, I am nostalgic for 95, it didn’t force me to execute 3 different things for what used to take one click.

What an awful, awful OS that was, but at least it forced me to learn about initializing drivers manually and balancing IRQ's at a young age depending on what combination of peripherals I needed for a particular game (joystick + sound card was always tricky)

Beg pardon? Windows 95 consolidated the mess of PnP initiatives and made it much easier for vendors to write protected mode drivers. The hell you describe is what *led to* the design of Windows 95's Wizard which made it a hell of a lot easier in many cases and didn't make the bad cases worse.

"consolidated the mess of PnP initiatives and made it much easier for vendors to write protected mode drivers." But that didn't actually happen until years later. Win98SE was the pinnacle of that era b/c by that time vendors moved to PCI or fixed their PnP.

Just because something is easier for a vendor doesn't mean any of them actually did it (still true today) In win95 pnp was utter trash - 98 fixed a lot of the problems but it was far from perfect

For the time, it was a pretty good OS! I wish the corp I worked for upgraded to it instead of sticking with Windows 3.1 and then moving to Windows NT. (To be fair, Solaris was better!) However, towards the end of the 90's and into the "oughts", it started to show how shaky its underpinnings were.

Brian Eno, best known for his experimental works and collaborations with David Bowie, composed the infamous startup sound for Windows 95. Eno’s composition came after Microsoft designers approached the iconic producer for their OS project in 1994.

So now they tell you your PC is not worthy to run Win 11 So you all run to buy a new PC that they can actually control from their operating system and option lock you out if they wish That also spies on you and gives them instant updates of your personal data

Going from MS-DOS to this back in the day was like grabbing a part for your car that could make it run on water and fly. At least that's how it seemed to 8 year old me who only used the computer for video games.

Hilarious TY very nice for a memory reboot but id never go back to windows now Linux protects my personal data and I still own my PC and the OS with thousands of free apps and in most cases better apps than windows equivalent

And it's been mostly downhill since then. 🤨 I have a perfectly good laptop, with lots of storage and lots of memory, running Win 10, but M$ refuses to upgrade me to Win 11 (although I wouldn't upgrade even if I could). 🤬 I wonder what backroom deals M$ has made with hardware vendors. 🤔 [==*==]
