they look engaging, but there's just one issue: the text is all so freaking small. I'm assuming the visual elements have been scaled based upon screen size, which makes the text scaled based upon size point get tiny on larger contemporary displays.

A way I would update this is to focus on text readability. Make sure it's big enough to be read by visitors, but keep the colorful elements in play. maybe lower their contrast slightly when obstructive, but largely keep it as is. The future of web design should have both form and function.

custom font text was usually just images off photoshop, in fact most of it is, so nothing is scaled. instead there were some common practices where you made your content fit within a 800px window.

This is what the future of web design SHOULD have looked like, we fucked up somewhere along the way and need to go back

god.. I remember gabocorp sites in the late 90's early 00's... the slickest flash animations and I haven't been as impressed with anything since.

That was previous to accessibility mandates and unnecessary accessibility laws forcing websites to adhere to certain standards. I still miss the time before sites asked about cookies, when browsers handled the cookies alone.

Looking through every generation of dancing bologna demos for lulz must be fun. I hate how people try to make their websites loaded with unnecessary transitions and animations, or worse yet, unwanted and unnecessary music and video.  Everyone has always complained and web designers keep pushing.

Then we got smartphones, and we realized web design like this didn't work on such earlier devices, so now every website has to look boring.
