It is likely that quantum computers will soon be able to break the encryption methods that secure your passwords and anything else kept under digital lock and key. Here's a little demonstration, purely for illustrative purposes, to give a better sense. Test it out now: wrd.cm/3T7TtUO

But also last time I checked we didn't know of a quantum algorithm to actually do this. And quantum computers themselves are far away from having enough stability and qubits. It's investor bait, regurgitated as journalism.

It kinda felt odd to have some many weirdly positive #quantum computing slop pieces recently... But maybe #nvidia just has data that implies the #ai bubble is about to burst? NB: if you click through, #reuters will think you're interested instead of laughing www.reuters.com/business/nvi...

And here’s what lastpass suggests as a “very secure” password. It’s almost like this “cracking” graphic on the wired site just returns the same number for everything…

In a 2021 research paper, Google engineer Craig Gidney and his coauthor suggested that it would take eight hours for a quantum computer with 20-million noisy qubits to factor RSA-2048 encryption. How big is the gap to classic computers? Take a look: wrd.cm/3T7TtUO

The demo only takes a maximum of 8 characters. My password manager phrase is over 60. Most passwords created by that are in the 20-30 range. This is poo.

As I understand it, this isn't about determining a password, as the demo implies. Rather, it is about public / private key encryption. Given the public key, the quantum computer is able to determine the private key in this amount of time. And thus able to decrypt and impersonate.

All encryption can be broken, including blockchain, sooner or later. Cannot be broken only means cannot be broken in your life time, using existing computers. Faster computers make the later sooner.
