When someone told me WWeek placed Angelita Morillo No. 5 in their ranking, I said, “Her Bluesky groupies are going to have a hissy-fit.” So it is. Angelita is a bully. She can dish it out but can’t take it. Block anybody you don’t like, “feisty” girl. Yeah, Angelita, you real tough.

Decorum must be weighted against outcomes. There’s a war between those who see outcomes as more important than decorum and vice versa. Personally, I’d give up every bit of decorum to stop the rapes at urban alchemy homeless shelters, but now I see WW editors feel differently.

We have eyes and ears. We see who is putting down the Councilors who are women and POC. We see YOU holding them to a different standard. We see who is being oppositional to progress and the will of the voters - it’s the very people you’ve chosen to endorse.

Picture someone whose shelter closed. Or a family at a run down park, part of a $700 million maintenance backlog. Council time and political capital are finite too. Weeks on a foie gras ban or a Zenith probe that found little are weeks not spent on them.

The replies have a point. Decorum matters less than outcomes. So grade the council on outcomes. Two budget cycles in a row of cuts to police, fire, parks and transportation. Shelters shuttered. Another $100 million plus deficit coming. That's a bad report card.

Abuse complaints from people in city funded shelters deserve a real investigation, no matter who's asking. I mean that. But the same energy belongs on keeping shelters open and parks usable. Those folks are waiting on the basics today.

And no, you can't pin it all on the mayor. Under the new charter the council sets the budget. All 12 of them. Whichever bloc you like, it owns this too. Ignore the tone stuff if you want. The list above still stands.

I am more concerned about people in power who are acting in the interest of the Portland Metro chamber than I am about decorum Why would we elect a riot cop who brutalized -people demonstrating about *Black people dying at the hands of the police* -legal observers -old people -my neighbors

Hi Emma, I don't understand your question. I am concerned about elected Portland City Council officials abusing power to please Portland Metro Chamber, that's my concern. I don't want taxpayer dollars to fund things that benefit the rich, I want taxpayer dollars to fund things that benefit everyone

We don't have the rich here like in other West Coast cities. This is the local DSA's basic problem. Cities do need jobs and they can't all be barista and non-profit work.

And that future is the Portland business alliance and cops. If a moderate screams at staff or defies court orders to avoid disclosing texts with racists attacking their colleagues, I’m sure they have good reasons. These uppity folks need to demonstrate the appropriate deference. For decorum.

What’s actually “high school cafeteria” behavior is basing your analysis of local elected officials on vibes and who said what to who, rather than policy and how they vote. Least alt alt-weekly ever.

The paragraphs on Morillo list a lot of things that make her a highly-effective council member, but then says she deserves a low ranking because she's "coursened public life." Seriously? It's 2026 FFS. It's absolutely the wrong time for tone policing.

before I say “yuck” at the end of this, I want to make clear that it’s in reply to your dishonest framing and the overall loser behavior when it comes to WW’s political coverage, not city council’s behavior. anyway: yuck!

you aren't even fucking trying, dude. someone got paid real american dollars to write "i'm scared of the angry latina" jesus fucking christ, please grow up and join the working class who are extremely angry and rightfully so

The earliest I can find WW listed in the Wayback Machine captures of the PBA member directory is August 2019. That may or may not be indicative of when they joined. They are The Oregonian in hipster drag.

The Willamette Week quoted representatives numerous times in articles during the period Aug 2019 to April 2023, I have never found a single instance where they disclosed to their readers that they themselves were members of the organization.

Don’t skip the silliest childhood fears section where WW takes the opportunity to make fun of somebody for being afraid of drowning because they almost drowned as a child.

Olivia Clark and Eric Zimmerman have two of the worst attendance records on the council, vote no more frequently than their colleagues, and contribute heavily to the supposed infighting that you think is plaguing the council. These endorsements are not based in reality.

I usually weigh WWeek's suggestions but this year, big oof. You've all tacked rightward at a time where the conservative side of the aisle is rushing headlong towards authoritarian chaos. You should all go work for the New York Times if you want to cozy up to Capital.

These endorsements follow neatly the path from endorsing Rene Gonzales over Joanne Hardesty, citing a need for change while NOT endorsing a new city charter citing a need not to change. Wow, @wweek.com, your libertarian, corporatism is showing hard.

Your healthcare coverage has been strong, so I can't dismiss WW outright. But WW may have just outright dismissed its readership.

The Willamette Week of even 20 years ago would see this post and be incredibly embarrassed. You used to be edgy and an actual alternative to the business class bullshit interests that The Oregonian represents.

Please understand hyperbolic statements like these only push people further away from the progressive cause. We can disagree with WW's endorsements, but they are far from alt right. Let's get on the same page so we can get the work done instead of jockeying for internet points.

I find it the peak of HS cafeteria for people like Olivia Clark and Eric Zimmerman to waste the council’s time to whine about banning animal torture. (Not to mention the racism and antisemitism)

@emma321.bsky.social if you want more Mamdanis you need to vote in more DSA candidates. Your personal vendetta is getting real icky at this point. Think big picture, and quit with the online haranguing of the people who are the most Madani/AOC like. WW is wrong, and we need to break the deadlock.
