I think Scott Manley did a video on this. Could theoretically work *if* the rocket engines were way off to the side. Which ofc causes no other problems so we should do it.

One of the best ways ultra high speed projectile launchers (e.g. spin launchers, mass drivers, big guns, etc) can get a complex capsule into space is by using a wake shield fired moments before the capsule launch. Atmosphere’s a drag, man.

But just think of the efficiencies. You can launch them from the same pad by mounting the following rocket in a deep trench beneath the first rocket and launch them simultaneously. You can even reduce manpower per launch as only one launch control team is needed for both rockets.

The two rockets would have to be moving faster through the atmosphere than the exhaust velocity for it to be a positive. Which even at the low end would be around Mach 10 for kerolox engines, which then has problems with potential soot buildup on the trailing rocket.

Oh, and the exhaust gas pressure would need to be higher than ambient pressure, which can reduce efficiency if you want to start at sea level and end in the effective vacuum of space.
