This gave me a visceral sense of dread and an irrational fear some where some how a psychotic government official would push such a project through regardless of how stupid it is.

Please don't show this to the actual Minister of Infrastructures in Italy. He may actually consider it a good solution for the bridge on Messina's Strait.

So many problems in life could be solved if there were sufficient balloons at the ready to attach to your person, your luggage, your furniture, your packages at the appropriate moment. (Think: hanging Xmas ornaments from your roof while balancing on a rickety ladder.)

Funny story, I feel it's unwise to construct a bridge in such a way that anyone with a rifle or a drone can cause untold amounts of damages and loss of human life...

Not exactly. If you fire at a building structure, at 'best' you're going to shatter a few windows, kill a few people. Nothing like destroying a bridge structure worth several billions, killing all travelers on that bridge, and causing a transport route disruption that could last a decade.

I wish I could argue the point but you are correct. More Americans would be viscerally upset at the traffic caused by the Hindenberg Memorial Bridge being shut down than are over the slaughter of children every week at the altar of the second amendment.

Yeah, just gotta solve that issue. Perhaps you could tether it to the ground somehow, like on the floor of the body of water. Maybe you could even make it rigid so it would keep it in place better. Wait a minute...
