as LA is burning, a swath of the country is recovering from an ice storm, Alabama is preparing for up to 6” of snow and I’m praying for the TX power grid, a reminder: we don’t need climate action just for future generations, we need it now. the climate crisis is here, all around us

hi. I’m an activist/climate communicator and I’ve been working to shift power and create change for 22 years so please don’t say stupid shit to me. this was a post about how we talk about climate. it’s not about hot and cold happening at once, it’s about weather being increasingly erratic.

I learned climate change in college in the 1980s as part of my degree in Biology. And since then I have watched both parties side step responsible action for controlling human inputs at every chance. Except Carter, he tried, but for different reasons.

but the same way the naysayers labelled the ACA as Obamacare, they labelled climate change as global warming, then used every tiny weather event to explain why it was wrong....yup. at this point, i just have the popcorn out. some stupid can't be fixed by anything short of dead

"Please don’t say stupid shit to me," I don't believe in climate change. I find it to be evident. What I also observe is that there's no magic button to fix it, and there's no working plan that gets all 8 billion plus people working together to solve the problem.

That must be exhausting. Thank you for your tireless and thankless effort. I’m not kissing your ass btw. Just want you to know even random strangers are rooting you on in your most trying times. How have you dealt with the mental side? I’m looking to get heavily involved when I move back to USA.

I will block you if you post cynical bullshit or comment that I’m stupid for working to improve our conditions your suggestion to…what, lay down and die? not really my thing

You're not stupid and we urgently need meaningful climate action ASAP. But let's not kid ourselves that anything we do today will have an observable effect for years to come. Climate action is all about stopping things from getting much worse in the future.

We, as a species, usually rank disasters or dangers by volume of human death they have caused. Smoking, wars, motor vehicle accidents collated by motor vehicle type, even shark attacks. Global warming and climate change already have death tolls in the tens of millions, but we're not counting those

Here's a tip they use aeroplanes instead of broomsticks. Legislation in this country Australia has been in affect since 1967 , they've been spraying the Australian Alps or cloud seeding. And they can't workout what's causing dieback in the snow gums . Believe or not , that's up to you .🍀

Can you cite this magical legislation that has been in "affect"? Cloud seeding is a lot of nonsense. There's no good evidence that it even works in the short-term, much less that it has lasting effects on the environment. Stop falling for ridiculous conspiracy theories.

...and we need to get the billionaires to pay for it, because they've been paid handsomely over the last 40 years by a system of unchecked capitalism that is designed to ignore the needs of the many at all costs.

We are in Simi Valley not far from the Palisades & we’re used to high winds. Let me tell you the wind last night was nothing like before. It was violent, loud, & despite our wind blocking cinder block walls around our property our house still rattled. I didn’t sleep all night it was terrifying. 🥺

Most municipalities just handle it as inexpensively as they can. Ice is the big issue. Cities brine the roads and do the best they can. There is no need for expensive snow blowers. Just the way it goes. We may have a few sketchy days every winter.

In Texas too and I feel you. It gets so bad here so quickly sometimes. It is amazing not just how little is being done, but how much is actively being done to ensure it gets worse. People in power just don't care what kind of world they leave behind anymore.

I think the texas powergrid is simply beyond hope at this point, they had a test run a couple of winters ago to find out how bad it really was, but it doesn't even look like they tried to put it back together.

Frankly at this point, if the government won’t do it, might as well have the masses who do care actually do it ourselves. Honestly more effective than thinking that a government who thinks money is a more valuable resource to fight for over anything else will actually do something.

I am so sorry for all the difficulties people are having, not only in the USA, Canada and the world around us……but it’s too bad your incoming president doesn’t believe anything about climate change! He’s too preoccupied trying to take other countries. What a shame! I hope you’re all okay.

Sadly the deniers are also antivax, anti help your neighbour, only in it for themselves until they are inconvenienced. Ruining everything for the rest

Probably far too late now to avoid a major extinction event. There are now too many positive feedback mechanisms in play for this to be controlled. We've known of the problem for 100 years and done nothing, partly because of the scientific ignorance of most of the populace who vote.

In the mean time all of social media other than Blue Sky is spreading disinformation stating that climate change is not real. Corporate America supports this lie so they are permitted to continue roasting the planet while Elon is planning an escape to Mars.

Grid seems to be holding up ok, there’s supposed to be one more day of really cold weather and then it’s just gonna be mildly annoying lol. The big problem is the rain coming today, it may freeze overnight.

Uhh PRETTY SURE the fires in California were caused by irresponsible ignorance of forest management then made worse by defunding the fire department in LA and compounded by the water in California being diverted to the ocean and destruction of dams and water reservoirs. All caused by DEMOCRAT VOTERS

And politicians turning the California fires into a political talking point on Fox News should remember their own state could be next. Climate change affects us all.

And for all the jerks that only understand their pocketbooks: We cannot afford to NOT invest in climate change mitigation. The cost of inaction will hit everyone much worse. Ya can start with insurance premiums - or just not being able to get insurance.

Egg Prices and Trans People and Immigrants, oh my! And the MSM Choir is singing out the chorus, kind of a four-part harmony of total submission to the MAGAt propaganda.

Everybody older than 30 years should know that from experience. Technology alone can not halp mankind survive. The big conundrum is how to reduce overall consumption of pretty much everything in a global economy built on unlimited growth.

This was preventable. California just doesn’t want to spend the money on water reservoirs. They have a drought but are right next to the damn Pacific Ocean??? I’m sick of hearing about climate change. I wanna talk about the people losing everything bc politicians are greedy.

I understand weather changes. I have been seeing the changes for 30 years. They can measure the carbon in the atmosphere and the temps have been rising every year. Like I said, denial.

Don't disagree but Republicans what to remove Climate Change from everywhere in the government because they don't believe in it. Democrats are at least trying to do something now. But yeah they both take money.

I don't think people understand that the time for action was 30, 40, 50 years ago. Pretty much everything is locked in at this point barring alien intervention or some god deciding we're worth saving. Global famine, mass starvation, another world war, those are the things to look forward to now.

they kept updating it, like come on, we could still have some impact if we change things now, we can still possibly avert the worst. but the political & media classes eventually started just ignoring it entirely.

except when liberal politicians wanted credit for doing like ~2% of the absolute bare minimum, which was often immediately reversed anyway despite not being remotely enough to change anything, either by the opposition of the right or the dictates of the donor class

You’re right. I’m in Alabama and we’re expecting snow Friday. In fact, some areas have already canceled school for Friday. It’s amazing when you actually think about the different weather related crises across the US.

The climate crisis did not cause Dems to make poor water conservation choices, drive insurers away, fail to do controlled burns, and all the rest of the poor policy choices that made a bad situation much, much worse.

Where am I wrong? Out of 100, climate change is probably responsible for 5, whereas the water mismanagement is responsible for 20, failure to clear out brush and manage the foliage is responsible for 20, kowtowing to EIS that make it impossible to build dams and other structures is 20, and so on.

Show me the water mismanagement. Because, spoiler alert, Donald lied about that again. Our fire-prevention knowledge and technology is better than it has ever been, but we're still seeing catastrophic fires like never before. The variable is climate change.

You have a source on that? Because my sources say differently. Those sources include the FAO of the UN. Not talking oil use (i.e. ag transport) - talking about the entire industry.

Conservative, Republican voters can't wrap their heads around this concept of "climate," and of course their clever, wily leaders are mostly still making a buck off the deal, so they will surely profess to not understand it either.

I live in PA… It’s currently pretty cold here (by our standards for this time of year), but we’ve had so little snow, which I actually find disappointing and bizarre. I remember when I was a kid, we had snow in December through February. Now we get nothing and southern states get it. It’s just odd.

Science Friday was talking about all the birds that have gone extinct in the past few years because of climate change. Animals depend on each other, and we are all animals. When they're gone, we're gone.

1) people, living people? don't make a lot of pollution and don't necessarily emit a whole lot of carbon. 2) wtf you talking about "changing farmland into warehouses?" The built-up area in the US is something like five percent of its total land area.

In the Midwest, they are selling off acres and acres of farmland they build houses on it, and now they’re building huge warehouses. The old song, “They paves paradise and put up a parking lot” is rampant here. Then we yell about deforesting the Amazon.

We have a president elect who will help TX and AL but not California. Fuck him. Blue states support the red states! Their Red policies allow the poverty of their citizens. We aren't united anymore. Blue states need to take back autonomy! Give me somewhere to move to!

But it would cost money & our billionaire friends, who have contributed more to climate change than anyone, don't even want to pay their fair share of taxes at the best of times To keep their riches, they've been allowed to spread misinformation about climate & scare some with higher egg prices!

As someone in the industry going out of business or just completely getting out of property coverage in a lot of areas is the most likely answer tbh for a lot of companies. The companies that will continue provide coverage in high risk areas will charge astronomical premiums
