I think the lesson from Lula is not never talk about the opposition; it's articulate a positive vision that's basically, We Can Just Do Things. That's why Mamdani-ism is so popular - voters have an intrinsic sense that their electeds have agency they're not using

The “wisdom of crowds” thesis has been thoroughly debunked, IMO. Polymarket, etc, are just an even-more-naked (thus even more ugly) line to Rich People’s Feelings, without the (increasingly slight) alignment with reality via actual money.

Any attempt to analyze whether the GOP has any morals or limits on their disgusting behavior based on the vile Ramaswamy ad is worthless if it doesn’t address Ramaswamy’s race and/or Arthur’s class. It’s not that there’s a line in general. It’s that there’s a line Ramaswamy and Arthur cannot cross.

(And if you’ve seen such an argument, plz share. This mini-thread brought by the third or fourth vapid “the GOP electorate is finally turning on them” piece. No. They are turning on what they see as the ethnic Indian and the white trash harridan.*)

* No, I don’t see them that way. The problem I have with Arthur is that she’s an abusive psychopath, not her class or gender or dental history. The problem I have with Ramaswamy is his fascism, not his parentage.

I am convinced that a significant part of the bipartisan blowback for that ad is know-your-place aggression. Maybe someone can talk me out of it, but it’s going to be difficult when Trump and Vance keep doing their thing with impunity. Show me the line well-off straight white men can’t cross.

One if the lessons to be learned from Brazil is to stop elevating your opponent’s social media (even to dunk) and promote your own message. _This applies to Matt Yglesias and his ilk, too._ Just stop it, please.

What's striking to me are the rules of engagement and the methodology of action here, which more or less is predicated on burying liberal delusions about "debate" or the "marketplace of ideas". The rules were ultimately very simple: amplify your own message and suppress your opponent's.

Probably the guy who's going to come out of this one looking like a hero is André Janones, a deputy (congressman) from Minas Gerais who just kind of... decided to take the reins of the situation, more or less, and people were feeling so aimless after the first round that they went along with it.

I can’t find it now but I think a lot about that post about an AI that can drink a beer with your buddy at a table by the river on a sunny day so you have time to make more spreadsheets

There's a constant low-level discussion on English-language bluesky about the electoral consequences of transphobic rhetoric from left-liberals but I think it's honestly worse than "they might not vote for you", it's more like, you're cutting yourself off from political labor and talent.

This is directly parallel to how UX design thoughtthinkers are on LinkedIn crowing how Claude Design lets us "do strategy—not pixel pushing", meanwhile design's access to the rooms where strategy is being done has NEVER been more constrained. GenAI concentrates power in the manager class only!

I keep seeing people mentioning how ai-generated code lets you spend more time thinking about what the app should do, but I think there’s a need to remember that there are large groups of engineers whose role hasn’t been redefined to include that level of control and trust.

Learning Brazilian Portuguese has definitely paid off. My inability to post is definitely encouraging me to work on writing (I deliberately avoided it, because my brain kept falling into Spanish pronunciation). I can read ok though!

Short-form social media writing has got to be some of the most difficult to read though. It’s very heavy on contractions, idioms, jokes, and memes. And squids. I have learned so many very strange squid facts.

Many comments on the great election victories in Brazil and Serbia state that the authorian right is in decline or that voters have rejected far-right authoritarianism. That is a wrong interpretation of what happened. Progressive movements mobilized and beat the authoritarian right. That's different

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

Eeeeeeee I just got home! This is the best news!!!!!

In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

Not to ruin anyone’s Sunday afternoon, but Brazilians are voting for president today. We’ll start getting returns at 4pm ET, and, based on the results of the first round it’d be a clear surprise if Lula survives against Bolsonaro — even if polls have tightened in the last two weeks.

I had no idea how to vote for the Everett charter amendments & couldn’t find good information. Event the voter handbook was unable to find opposing voices. So on the theory that if there were something sneaky going on, someone would have said so, I voted for what sounded good (yes for all).

If you’re thinking I meant the county charter, please practice reading comprehension. (In fact that was one of the big problems in searching for info online — people kept confusing them!)

I want you to think about realistically managing your triggers & traumatic stressors every day, specifically because your life should be about things OTHER than your triggers & traumatic stressors every day. True recovery empowers us to think about things other than recovery.

This seems like one of the reasons we need to pack the supreme court.

I have yet to find ways to air fry vegetables that I’m really happy with. Anyone got recipes/techniques they like? (Not too much oil, which I’m aware might well be the problem, but I’m dieting for chronic illness, sigh.)

The best so far was sliced up daikon: dried in a salad spinner lined with paper towels; tossed with a little oil, salt, and fancy-ass “black garlic ramen pepper” from Spice House; and air fried — tossing every 4 min — until the surfaces were partly browned and lost that translucent uncooked look.

With AI, fixating on apocalyptic scenarios ignores real-world problems involving the actually already existing AI. We have proven methods to address disruptive technology, but for anyone who opposes them, apocalyptic fantasies can be a useful distraction. My latest, in @liberalcurrents.com:

liberalcurrents.comThe Plausible Techno-Dystopian FutureThe problems caused by AI development are widespread and multiplying, but none involves a digital demon that kills us all.

This thread is also about the labor costs for government workers that we don’t think we should pay.

rm [-r] lininger@0xdaeda1a.bsky.social

One of the big changes in my lifetime in the US is that the cost of labor has gone way, way up. I don’t know how to pick apart the “Dem consultant class” stuff, knowing that. I’m a consultant. I’m a consultant because I can’t get a job with benefits.
