The Supreme Court invited exactly this when it held that the president's attempt to conduct "sham" "investigations" was a core executive power immune from all regulation, including criminal prosecution, in Trump v. United States.

Absolutely everybody who knows anything about labor demographics saw this coming miles away. The last 18 months have been a steady stream of “nobody could have predicted” things every minimally knowledgable person loudly predicted.

RIP to one of football’s greats. Fondly remembered at all his former stops including of course Hamburg. #HSV An immensely pleasant man to work with too. There’s only one Kevin Keegan. 🙏

Fun fact: While Jews made up less than 1% of the population of Argentina, they comprised up to 12% of those disappeared during the Dirty War, due to the antisemitism of the right-wing junta and the association of Jews with leftism. More Jews were killed in the Argentine Dirty War than on 10/7/2023.

Joel S.@joelhs.bsky.social

Yes, Argentina, that country that has famously never dabbled in antisemitism, unlike Spain. Just don't ask the people in Javier Milei's government where all of their ancestors came from and why.

Argentina's comebacks and wild scenarios since the round of 16 against Cape Verde. We can only applaud, the ultimate survivors (Lionel Messi's level at 39 years old, I'm completely blown away)

stuff like this is why one important avenue for court reform is just nixing the shadow docket altogether and forcing these people to explain themselves to the public when they issue orders. also, making their records property of the united states and subject to publication when they leave the bench.

Alex Aronson@alexaronson.bsky.social

Amy Coney Barrett just told Congress that it would be inappropriate to explain the reasoning behind the Court’s unreasoned shadow docket orders. As if unreasoned judicial orders are a thing. They are not. The reasoning is the whole point.

This passage from @davidlat.bsky.social perfectly captures the false dichotomy you see so often from the Supreme Court's defenders: The Court is held out as "independent" because it doesn't *always* rule for Trump. That whitewashes (1) how often it *does*; & (2) its bad behavior in non-Trump cases.

I can't believe I have to say this but the point is not "corrupt World Cups are not new". It's that this specific World Cup has been a succession of "f**k yous" to various parts of the global football community, and this is the latest one. And I doubt it will be the last.

Justice Brown Jackson's argument for birthright citizenship is very moving. I recommend reading it in full. An excerpt with alt-text below. “The Reconstruction Amendments were an anticaste, antisubordination reset for the Nation, not a mere spot treatment for the dark stain of slavery.” — KBJ

With this ruling, the birthright issue is not going away. The right hasn't really begun *organizing* around getting rid of the citizenship clause. Like Roe, this will be their fight for a generation. And if the Democrats just say "we won" and ignore it, like Roe, the Republicans will eventually win.

Kylian Mbappé's halftime without scoring is more than positive, as his two assists attest to that, but it's also the turnarounds in play, the precision of his decisions, and the work done in Norway's half. A captain definitively on a mission

The central claim of SCOTUS decisions like Shelby County and Callais is that we’ve made so much progress since Jim Crow and slavery that the VRA’s remedies aren’t needed. The central claim of conservative elected officials is that Jim Crow and slavery weren’t that bad, anyway.

Robert Downen@robertdownen.bsky.social

With no explanation, Republicans on the State Board of Education have cut lessons that taught about racial segregation and slave revolts; that acknowledged slavery was because of skin color; and that said southern states seceded from the Union in part to preserve the practice of slavery.
