After 14.5 years my book The Dispatch: Rogue Americans in British Asia is coming out November 24th from Audant Publishing House. I will update for pre-sales soon. I'm so excited! If you know Levi Savage. This is also his story.

My mom has very emphatically told me to edit carefully all the way to the end of the book. Multiple times. It is her pet peeve when writers cut corners at the end. So we’re breathing, sleeping, showering in the edits of the last fateful chapters.

I went down so many enjoyable rabbit holes for this. The New Yorker cartoon is incredible.

Breaking my heart this morning: “Fitting ankle monitors on noncitizens without a criminal history who remain in compliance with their immigration cases has little precedent.” True in the narrowest sense. False given how the history of slavery and peonage roars through each part of this story.

nytimes.comIn Ohio, Haitians Feel Shaken by Ankle Monitors and Increased ICE PresenceThe devices, which will make it easier for authorities to locate immigrants in Springfield if large-scale deportations begin, have intensified a sense of dread.

this attitude is, imo, one of the biggest keys to a happy life no matter who you are, there are going to be people in your life who are more successful than you at things you care deeply about, and sometimes that’s skill and sometimes it’s luck, but if you resent them for it you’ll be miserable

John Scalzi@scalzi.com

The flip side of understanding how much of one's career is luck is that it helps tamp down envy when friends catch luck. I have friends with movies and TV series! Other friends with ten times my sales! Good for them. It's nice when people you like get that break. They deserve it, as much as anyone.

The most effective Palestinian case I’ve ever seen is recently with the calm Palestinians videoing Israeli settlers and soldiers looting and destroying homes and filling their wells with garbage. A well played resistance I can get behind.

Them: Nation-states are natural History: So after the Ming pirate king kicked the VoC out of Taiwan, the VoC seized a ship owned by the Siamese king crewed by Chinese seaman flying the Portuguese flag, after which Siam's Persian portmaster got the pirate king's ppl to attack the Dutch quarter

We're today marking 175 years since the Great Exhibition of 1851 opened in Hyde Park 🌳 When Queen Victoria opened the Great Exhibition it must have felt like the greatest show on earth. We wonder that they'd have thought of being able to take part in a Augmented Reality Experience!

When you’ve been working on a project for so long and with so many interruptions that you’ve bought the book you ‘have to have’ twice (2019, 2024; I blame Covid).

Is it actually the case that Hormuz was open until Trump attacked Iran? If every calculation re Iran included the potential closure of the straight then it has been an effective threat of force. A threat of force that achieved some of the same outcomes as actual control of the straight but..

for less money, manpower, and machines. So it seems economic interests have long outweighed social interests in the Hormuz calculation. Or Iran's social interests were seen as less of a cost than the economic pain that would potentially cause more social problems.

A useful reminder that you *want* 'your side' to be losing military war games a lot. The whole point is to ask, 'how will this go in unfavorable circumstances' or 'what is the worst, most effective way my enemy can come at me?' If your military wins all their war games...those are bad war games.

Secretary of Defense Rock@sodrock.bsky.social

Do militaries rig wargames to get the outcomes they like. Of course, the Germans famously rigged a defense in the west in the runup to WWI to self justify the schlieffen plan, but MC is only useful as a lesson insofar as “Blue gets it shit rocked”

Finland didn't really have a women's suffrage movement. It had a universal suffrage movement. It was a class struggle. Upper class women treated working class women worse than working class men did. Women's rights got a boost from working class men fighting for equal rights alongside them.

Women's contribution to the workforce as leaders of households, craftspeople, or factory workers for example, has been a necessity. Women having some independence and agency was normal. Equality and worker's movements were part of one big movement pushing for rights all across the board.

Like Sen Van Hollen but these Democrat plans to not pay income taxes is disappointing. Redistribution seems to hit with the really loud. But doesn’t hit with me, and given Trump’s rise, probably doesn’t hit with a lot of people. How do you define families that barely have enough? Defy economics.

Senator Chris Van Hollen@vanhollen.senate.gov

Americans are working harder & longer & still can't make ends meet. I'm proposing a bill to cut taxes for 130 million workers, paid for by a surtax on income over $1 million a year. It's time our tax code worked for working people & the wealthiest pay their fair share.

Really interested in reading about the impact of Iran’s oil on Pakistan right now. I have a dear friend in Karachi whose been telling me about some of the impacts on individuals, And I’d love to learn more about it broadly. But hard to find so far..
